Revolution in Low-scoring Battle
Shropshire Revolution 3 - Edinburgh Wolves 6
8th August 2010
Shropshire Revolution saw their
playoff hopes take a knock on
Saturday, 7 August as they narrowly
lost their last regular season game 6-3
against visitors Edinburgh Wolves.
The defeat which hands the Northern
division II crown to Edinburgh, means
Shropshire will have a nervous wait
to see if conference rivals Lancashire
Wolverines can win both of their
last two games and therefore pip
Revolution to a place in the playoffs.
Saturday’s game was a real defensive
battle with a touchdown only being
scored midway through the final
quarter. Shropshire had started the
game in fine style driving the ball
into Edinburgh territory before an
errant Rob McLean pass was picked
off. This first stuttering drive paved
the way for the rest of the half, with
the Revolution offence gaining yards
only to be unable to punch the ball in
when in sight of the Scottish goal line.
Although Shropshire’s leading rusher
Russ Lingwood was in great form,
racking up 175 yards on the day, it was
place kicker Matt Pearce who got the
only points for the home side – a 24
yard field goal that left Revolution 3-0
up at the half.
The second half was dominated by
Edinburgh’s ball controlling offense
as they gained ground and eat up the
clock. Shropshire’s powerful defence
was able to keep the visitors at bay,
but eventually, in the forth quarter, the
Wolves broke Revolution hearts when
giant offensive lineman Martin Punter
lined up in the Edinburgh backfield
and, on his second attempt ploughed
into the endzone from a few yards
out. The point after was missed, but
with Shropshire unable to score on
their remaining two drives, Edinburgh
secured the win, the conference
championship and their place in the
playoffs.
Revolution Head Coach Dave
Reid said: “The loss was a massive
disappointment for us, I honestly
thought we had enough power and
talent to secure the win but the four
turnovers we made really hurt us.
Also, while Edinburgh stuck to their
conservative, low scoring and ballcontrol
game plan, we didn’t execute
our own plan well enough and that
ultimately was the difference between
the teams.”
“Ironically though, if the results go our
way – and we should know within the
next few weeks – we could be visiting
Edinburgh in the first round of the
playoffs. Our season may not yet be
over!”
