Revolution in Low-scoring Battle<br />

Shropshire Revolution saw their<br />
playoff hopes take a knock on<br />
Saturday, 7 August as they narrowly<br />
lost their last regular season game 6-3<br />
against visitors Edinburgh Wolves.<br />
The defeat which hands the Northern<br />
division II crown to Edinburgh, means<br />
Shropshire will have a nervous wait<br />
to see if conference rivals Lancashire<br />
Wolverines can win both of their<br />
last two games and therefore pip<br />
Revolution to a place in the playoffs.<br />
Saturday’s game was a real defensive<br />
battle with a touchdown only being<br />
scored midway through the final<br />
quarter. Shropshire had started the<br />
game in fine style driving the ball<br />
into Edinburgh territory before an<br />
errant Rob McLean pass was picked<br />
off. This first stuttering drive paved<br />
the way for the rest of the half, with<br />
the Revolution offence gaining yards<br />
only to be unable to punch the ball in<br />
when in sight of the Scottish goal line.<br />
Although Shropshire’s leading rusher<br />
Russ Lingwood was in great form,<br />
racking up 175 yards on the day, it was<br />
place kicker Matt Pearce who got the<br />
only points for the home side – a 24<br />
yard field goal that left Revolution 3-0<br />
up at the half.<br />

The second half was dominated by<br />
Edinburgh’s ball controlling offense<br />
as they gained ground and eat up the<br />
clock. Shropshire’s powerful defence<br />
was able to keep the visitors at bay,<br />
but eventually, in the forth quarter, the<br />
Wolves broke Revolution hearts when<br />
giant offensive lineman Martin Punter<br />
lined up in the Edinburgh backfield<br />
and, on his second attempt ploughed<br />
into the endzone from a few yards<br />
out. The point after was missed, but<br />
with Shropshire unable to score on<br />
their remaining two drives, Edinburgh<br />
secured the win, the conference<br />
championship and their place in the<br />
playoffs.<br />
Revolution Head Coach Dave<br />
Reid said: “The loss was a massive<br />
disappointment for us, I honestly<br />
thought we had enough power and<br />
talent to secure the win but the four<br />
turnovers we made really hurt us.<br />
Also, while Edinburgh stuck to their<br />
conservative, low scoring and ballcontrol<br />
game plan, we didn’t execute<br />
our own plan well enough and that<br />
ultimately was the difference between<br />
the teams.”<br />
“Ironically though, if the results go our<br />
way – and we should know within the<br />
next few weeks – we could be visiting<br />
Edinburgh in the first round of the<br />
playoffs. Our season may not yet be<br />
