Coventry Adult Flag
Coventry Jets, Chichester Sharks, Basingstoke Zombie Horde
5th September 2010
The Coventry Jets adult flag team
travelled to Chichester to take on two
teams that were still competing to
qualify for the finals day in Worcester
later this month. With an injury
depleted squad, Head Coach Andrew
Gambrill had only six fit players and
must have known that it would be
a long day against two full strength
sides in the shape of hosts, Chichester
Sharks and the Basingstoke Zombie
Horde. Tendai Chieza was a frustrated
sideline assistant for the games after
undergoing finger surgery while Adam
Grindrod and Matt Consadine were
also missing.
Coventry put on a spirited show but
were no match for the Sharks as
they fell 50-7. The game hinged on a
referring no call as quarterback Rob
Coleman threw an interception but was
seemingly impeded as he chased down
the returner. The official refused to see
Coleman’s point and the Sharks were
awarded the crucial touchdown for a
14-0 lead. Coleman could not get into
any sort of rhythm after the incident
and only connected once with the Jets’
leading receiver, Steve Timmins, who
once again had a powerful game.
Rookie centre Chris Sears played well
throughout the game from all areas
of the offensive line as did his team
mates Tikisha McCook, Gemma Eaton
and Coach Gambrill. As the weather
turned, wind and rain curtailed any
chance of a Jets comeback as Coleman
threw some questionable passes as his
mechanics deserted him.
Coventry Adult Flag in Home Defeat
London Rebels 21 - Coventry Jets 6
12th September 2010
The Jets finished their 2010 season
with a hard fought 21-6 home defeat
against the, finals chasing, London
Rebels. The Jets started the game
well with quarterback Rob Coleman
marching the team down field for
Adam Grindrod to throw an option
pass to Steve Timmins for the game’s
first score. Coventry’s defence had
a good day, being beaten only once
on a deep precision pass from Brad
Madison for a 7-6 Rebels lead at the
half.
Coleman couldn’t settle back into his
stride in the second period and the Jets
offence never really got going. Lady
Luck twisted the knife in the Jets back
one more time on a Rebels extra point
as a tipped ball, first by Timmins and
then twice more by Coleman, bounced
up into a Rebels receivers hands for a
14-6 lead.
Another blow for the Jets was the loss
of influential Captain Adam Grindrod
as he took a hit to the knee whilst the
Jets were chasing the game. London
were too strong for the Jets and added
another score to make their playoff
place safe. The final score of 21- 6
enough to sneak the Rebels into the
wildcard match as third placed finishers.
In other news influential Centre Matt
Consadine has decided that, due to
injury, he’ll be hanging up his cleats.
General Manager Rob Coleman stated
“We’re gutted to lose Matt as he was
the best German player on the team.
He always brought fun to training and
games and will be a big loss. We wish
the big man all the best for the future”.
Whilst the Jets finished bottom of the
league there is much to be excited
about for 2011. With a wealth of talent
coming through from the junior set up
and Coach Gambrill’s vast experience,
Coventry are in strong position. With
the playoffs out of the reach for some
time the Jets were able to turn their
attention to development, combined
with a never say die attitude the future
appears to be bright for Coventry. After
all, the only way is up.
MATCH REPORTS
A match up with the Zombie Horde
proved a closer affair with the Jets
going into halftime trailing 20-6 as
Timmins once again scored for the
Jets. Some rough tactics from the
Horde ensued as the match officials
deserted the non-contact rules in
favour of what looked more like a
Super League tie. Basingstoke took the
match by a score of 32-12 and a TKO.
Coach Gambrill and his players will
regroup as they prepare for their final
tie at home to the London Rebels
on the 12th of September. Whilst
Coventry’s tackling let them down a
couple of times leading to touchdowns
on the day, they never gave up
something that Gambrill can be very
proud of. With a long off season
coming up the Jets have a wealth of
talent coming through the ranks to
bolster their numbers for next season
and Coventry’s never say die attitude
and team spirit bodes well for 2011.
