Coventry Adult Flag<br />

Coventry Jets, Chichester Sharks, Basingstoke Zombie Horde<br />

5th September <strong>2010</strong><br />

The Coventry Jets adult flag team<br />

travelled to Chichester to take on two<br />

teams that were still competing to<br />

qualify for the finals day in Worcester<br />

later this month. With an injury<br />

depleted squad, Head Coach Andrew<br />

Gambrill had only six fit players and<br />

must have known that it would be<br />

a long day against two full strength<br />

sides in the shape of hosts, Chichester<br />

Sharks and the Basingstoke Zombie<br />

Horde. Tendai Chieza was a frustrated<br />

sideline assistant for the games after<br />

undergoing finger surgery while Adam<br />

Grindrod and Matt Consadine were<br />

also missing.<br />

Coventry put on a spirited show but<br />

were no match for the Sharks as<br />

they fell 50-7. The game hinged on a<br />

referring no call as quarterback Rob<br />

Coleman threw an interception but was<br />

seemingly impeded as he chased down<br />

the returner. The official refused to see<br />

Coleman’s point and the Sharks were<br />

awarded the crucial touchdown for a<br />

14-0 lead. Coleman could not get into<br />

any sort of rhythm after the incident<br />

and only connected once with the Jets’<br />

leading receiver, Steve Timmins, who<br />

once again had a powerful game.<br />

Rookie centre Chris Sears played well<br />

throughout the game from all areas<br />

of the offensive line as did his team<br />

mates Tikisha McCook, Gemma Eaton<br />

and Coach Gambrill. As the weather<br />

turned, wind and rain curtailed any<br />

chance of a Jets comeback as Coleman<br />

threw some questionable passes as his<br />

mechanics deserted him.<br />

London Rebels 21 - Coventry Jets 6<br />

12th September <strong>2010</strong><br />

The Jets finished their <strong>2010</strong> season<br />

with a hard fought 21-6 home defeat<br />

against the, finals chasing, London<br />

Rebels. The Jets started the game<br />

well with quarterback Rob Coleman<br />

marching the team down field for<br />

Adam Grindrod to throw an option<br />

pass to Steve Timmins for the game’s<br />

first score. Coventry’s defence had<br />

a good day, being beaten only once<br />

on a deep precision pass from Brad<br />

Madison for a 7-6 Rebels lead at the<br />

half.<br />

Coleman couldn’t settle back into his<br />

stride in the second period and the Jets<br />

offence never really got going. Lady<br />

Luck twisted the knife in the Jets back<br />

one more time on a Rebels extra point<br />

as a tipped ball, first by Timmins and<br />

then twice more by Coleman, bounced<br />

up into a Rebels receivers hands for a<br />

14-6 lead.<br />

Another blow for the Jets was the loss<br />

of influential Captain Adam Grindrod<br />

as he took a hit to the knee whilst the<br />

Jets were chasing the game. London<br />

were too strong for the Jets and added<br />

another score to make their playoff<br />

place safe. The final score of 21- 6<br />

enough to sneak the Rebels into the<br />

wildcard match as third placed finishers.<br />

In other news influential Centre Matt<br />

Consadine has decided that, due to<br />

injury, he’ll be hanging up his cleats.<br />

General Manager Rob Coleman stated<br />

“We’re gutted to lose Matt as he was<br />

the best German player on the team.<br />

He always brought fun to training and<br />

games and will be a big loss. We wish<br />

the big man all the best for the future”.<br />

Whilst the Jets finished bottom of the<br />

league there is much to be excited<br />

about for 2011. With a wealth of talent<br />

coming through from the junior set up<br />

and Coach Gambrill’s vast experience,<br />

Coventry are in strong position. With<br />

the playoffs out of the reach for some<br />

time the Jets were able to turn their<br />

attention to development, combined<br />

with a never say die attitude the future<br />

appears to be bright for Coventry. After<br />

all, the only way is up.<br />

MATCH REPORTS<br />

A match up with the Zombie Horde<br />

proved a closer affair with the Jets<br />

going into halftime trailing 20-6 as<br />

Timmins once again scored for the<br />

Jets. Some rough tactics from the<br />

Horde ensued as the match officials<br />

deserted the non-contact rules in<br />

favour of what looked more like a<br />

Super League tie. Basingstoke took the<br />

match by a score of 32-12 and a TKO.<br />

Coach Gambrill and his players will<br />

regroup as they prepare for their final<br />

tie at home to the London Rebels<br />

on the 12th of September. Whilst<br />

Coventry’s tackling let them down a<br />

couple of times leading to touchdowns<br />

on the day, they never gave up<br />

something that Gambrill can be very<br />

proud of. With a long off season<br />

coming up the Jets have a wealth of<br />

talent coming through the ranks to<br />

bolster their numbers for next season<br />

and Coventry’s never say die attitude<br />

and team spirit bodes well for 2011.<br />
