number of basic
communications technologies
including the microphone,
the telegraph, radio
transmission, airborne
radar, microwave
television transmission
and packet-switched data
communication as the
precursor of the Internet.
Industrial and academic
investments are maintaining
Wales’ presence at the
forefront of communications
technology.

As part of the initiative
to strengthen Wales as
an innovative destination
for knowledge based
businesses, nine Techniums
have been created to
provide appropriate facilities
in a number of sectors.
Two are devoted to the
communications sector. The
Technium Digital at Swansea
covers communications,
multimedia, animation,
telecommunications,
e-learning and information
technology. The Technium
opTIC at St Asaph, as the
name implies, covers all
aspects of optronics to build
on the skills and expertise
availably locally in the
existing north Wales cluster.
Airborne radar
was developed by
Edward Bowen from
Swansea in 1940 to
create the reliable,
operational system
used in World War II.
