1869 The Landore Works near Swansea is built to promote
steelmaking by the Siemens-Martin open-hearth
method.
1863 Robert Wynn & Sons Ltd founded in newport. The
company went on to move the heaviest load ever,
of 300 tons, on a British road.
1857 Tallest viaduct in Britain opened at Crumlin.
1857 Dowlais ironworks open the world’s most powerful
rolling mill.
1857 The first steel rail in the world is rolled at Ebbw Vale.
1856 Dowlais ironworks become the first to take out a licence
to use the Bessemer steel process.
1855 David Hughes from Bala invented the type-printing
telegraph which was used throughout the expanding
USA by the Western Union Telegraph Co. He later
invented the carbon granule microphone of which the
originals are in the Science Museum in London and
demonstrated the first transmission of electromagnetic
waves in 1879.
1852 Brunel completes his tubular suspension bridge over the
River Wye at Chepstow to link Cardiff and Gloucester
providing a direct link from Swansea to London.
1852 At the time of the death of Sir John Guest, the Dowlais
ironworks is not only the largest ironworks but the
largest manufacturing complex in the world.
