1869 The L<strong>and</strong>ore Works near Swansea is built to promote<br />
steelmak<strong>in</strong>g by the Siemens-Mart<strong>in</strong> open-hearth<br />

1863 Robert Wynn & Sons Ltd founded <strong>in</strong> newport. The<br />
company went on to move the heaviest load ever,<br />
of 300 tons, on a British road.<br />

1857 Dowlais ironworks open the world’s most powerful<br />

1856 Dowlais ironworks become the first to take out a licence<br />

USA by the Western Union Telegraph Co. He later<br />
<strong>in</strong>vented the carbon granule microphone of which the<br />
orig<strong>in</strong>als are <strong>in</strong> the Science Museum <strong>in</strong> London <strong>and</strong><br />
demonstrated the first transmission of electromagnetic<br />
waves <strong>in</strong> 1879.<br />
1852 Brunel completes his tubular suspension bridge over the<br />
River Wye at Chepstow to l<strong>in</strong>k Cardiff <strong>and</strong> Gloucester<br />
provid<strong>in</strong>g a direct l<strong>in</strong>k from Swansea to London.<br />
1852 At the time of the death of Sir John Guest, the Dowlais<br />
ironworks is not only the largest ironworks but the<br />
