1.3 The Ball Joints 17 1.3 The Ball Joints The transmission of rotary movement between two angled shafts by means of two bevel gears (Fig. 1.17a) is uniform, apart from small discrepancies due to play and manufacturing variations. It was an imaginative concept to replace the gear teeth by balls and spherical pockets to provide the transmission (Fig. 1.17b). The balls are held as if on a ring and circulate between the input and output members of the joint. However, in order to give the ball joint the ability to articulate an important step remains. The spherical pockets have to be extended into ball tracks in a bell-shaped outer race and a spherical inner race (Fig.1.17c).The ball-track principle allowed the development of universal joints to begin anew and led to the compact constant velocity joint (Fig. 1.17d).
