The torque is transmitted by only three balls, depending on the direction of rotation, while the remaining three centre and hold it together. The balls are preloaded because this cageless joint only works fully without play. The joint is completely encapsulated and thus protected from falling apart. It is lubricated for life with SAE 90 hypoid oil and is sealed against water by a very strong boot.

Fixed joint of the Weiss type In the eighties, this joint was replaced by the VL joint because it is lighter, cheaper, easier to repair and less likely to fail. Fixed joints of the Weiss type became known worldwide after they were used as outboard joints in the part-time front wheel drives of American military trucks in the Second World War. They were produced in Germany from 1947 to 1965 for spares, but were discontinued because the permissible speed, articulation angle and durability were too low. A two-ball joint following the Weiss principle was developed in 1956 by Gaston Devos (Fig. 1.30). His two balls run in straight tracks inclined at an angle of approximately 12° to the axes of the ball yokes compared with 25 to 30° for the four-ball Weiss joints. Devos obtained very smooth running and high torque capacity, a large articulation angle of 42° and high mechanical efficiency. One ball transmits the torque while the other grips the joint and preloads for the reverse travel. This joint was fitted in the small Citroën 2CV instead of the production Hooke’s joints which demonstrated their non-uniformity under hard cornering. In 1927 Alfred Rzeppa filed an application (US-Pat. 1665 280) for a joint which still included the deficiency of Whitney’s joint. He therefore introduced in 1933 positive steering of the balls through a cage with a pilot (guide) lever (Fig. 1.23b) as an auxiliary control device. The cage is enlarged by means of a hemispherical cup. The lever with two outer and a middle ball is mounted in three places: in the joint shank, in the hemispherical part and in the inner part of the joint. The position of the three
