With this method of steering the whole depth of the track is retained which gives a high torque capacity. The pilot lever was however the weak point [1.23] 3 . Rzeppa’s principle did not achieve a breakthrough until Bernard Stuber, also in 1933, again with a “ball and socket” joint (US Patent 1975 758), offset the generating centres of the tracks by the amount c from the centre of the joint (Fig. 1.26a–d, 1.28). In so doing he created tracks which intersected (Fig. 1.26b) and even with a non-articulated joint, automatic positioning into the bisecting plane p of the two joint bodies. The big advantages of the Rzeppa joint of 1934 with offset steering (US- Pat. 2046 584) are an articulation angle of up to 45° and simple assembly: it is not necessary to separate and then bolt together the bell-shaped outer part. Having shown the principle of constant velocity and the steering of the balls, the conditions for constant velocity will now be analysed. Two different methods can be used: – the indirect method, where to output angle j2 must be equal to the input angle j1. The design of the joint must then be determined. – the direct method, in which for a given joint, the relationship j2 = f (r, j1, b) is determined mathematically and a check is then made to see whether the condition j2 = j1 is fulfilled. 3 Further pilot levers as steering aid to the cage even with small angles: Rzeppa (US-PS 2010899/1933 and 2046584/1934), John Wooler (GB-PS 760681/1952), E.
