1.3 The Ball Joints 29 motor vehicles, while in 1905 Daimler used a round muff to achieve considerable plunge relative to the back axle (Fig. 1.34). Centric plunging joints go back to Robert Suczek 1938 and Henri Faure 1961. In general the plunging joint was used where the gap between the two joints varies. As with the RF fixed joints, Rzeppa type plunging joints find applications in cars, this time as inner “differential-side” joints. In 1955 Robert Bouchard invented a plunging pivoting joint, in addition to his fixed joint (Fig. 1.16, 1.36). The real advantage of this joint was its easy plunging action without axial force. Against this however, when the joint was at an angle, undesirable vibrations occurred due to unbalance. Hence it could not compete with the ball plunging joint and the tripode joint. Robert Suczek’s joint with straight tracks with parallel axes needs a cage to steer the balls- and auxiliary steering. The balls are steered on the offset principle into the plane of symmetry p using auxiliary cup-shaped members which act on the Fig. 1.34.
