Plate 37. Protein crystals in cellular compartments. 1. Protein crystal in a mitochondrion of Malpigia glabra. Lattice lines are clearly seen and the overall shape of the crystal is clear with relatively sharp facets seen on four sides. Note also the close association with the inner membrane of the mitochondrion. 2. Plastid in the phloem of corn; the lattice lines are sometimes clear. 3, 5 and 6. Plate 38. Crystals of Euglena granulata. 1. TEM of a Euglena granulata cell containing numerous crystals. A portion of the chloroplast, the nucleus and several mitochondria are visible. Note that the individual crystals are each associated with a vacuole and each possesses a crystal chamber of its own. 2. Enlarged view of a crystal chamber membrane, which follows the structure of many crystal facets; the crystal was extracted from the chamber during fixation of the specimen.
