THE FIELD ARTILLERY JOURNAL<br />

9. In general charge of all messages received or sent by flag<br />

or agent from <strong>the</strong> battalion station.<br />

(a) Keeps chronological record of all important messages<br />

received or sent.<br />

(b) Assists <strong>the</strong> scouts in sending or receiving flag<br />

messages (to or from reconnaissance officers,<br />

auxiliary observers, combat train, and so forth).<br />

(c) Superintends <strong>the</strong> work of <strong>the</strong> agents in carrying<br />

messages.<br />

SIGNAL CORPORAL<br />

1. Under general supervision of <strong>the</strong> battalion sergeant major<br />

has charge of and is responsible for all <strong>the</strong> signal equipment of<br />

<strong>the</strong> battalion. He makes such tests and repairs as he is<br />

authorized to make and reports all trouble which he cannot<br />

remedy to <strong>the</strong> adjutant personally at <strong>the</strong> first opportunity.<br />

2. In charge of <strong>the</strong> reel cart on <strong>the</strong> march.<br />

3. Learns from <strong>the</strong> leading executive officer whenever <strong>the</strong><br />

route is ordered marked and at once takes <strong>the</strong> reel cart forward<br />

at a collected trot to report to <strong>the</strong> major.<br />

4. Under <strong>the</strong> direction of <strong>the</strong> battalion sergeant major lays<br />

<strong>the</strong> wire and establishes kind of communication ordered.<br />

5. Sees that <strong>the</strong> reel cart, after <strong>the</strong> instruments are removed<br />

and <strong>the</strong> wire laid, is taken to a place of safety, or that <strong>the</strong> horses<br />

are unhitched and taken to a place of safety and properly cared<br />

for by <strong>the</strong> drivers.<br />

6. Acts as operator at <strong>the</strong> battalion station, reporting to <strong>the</strong><br />

adjutant or major when communication with <strong>the</strong> various<br />

batteries is established or broken.<br />

7. Learns from <strong>the</strong> adjutant or major what artificial cover,<br />

musician, <strong>the</strong> signal private and <strong>the</strong> agents, constructs same at<br />

if any, is required for <strong>the</strong> station, and, assisted by <strong>the</strong> battalion<br />

<strong>the</strong> first opportunity.<br />

8. After <strong>the</strong> completion of <strong>the</strong> problem reels up <strong>the</strong> wire and<br />

sees that <strong>the</strong> instruments are collected and properly packed.<br />
