selected as the recipient <strong>of</strong> the 2008 James Oberstar Award for<br />

involving 70 percent <strong>of</strong> its students in walking and biking ac�vi-<br />

�es. More than 7,000 people par�cipated in Boulder’s 2009 Bike<br />

to Work Day, one <strong>of</strong> more than 50 events during Walk & Bike<br />

Month. Other events include bike rides, walks, clinics, Park(ing)<br />

Spaces Day, contests between employers and individuals to encourage<br />

cycling and huge community gatherings. Local bicycling<br />

and outdoor-related businesses have formed an industry cluster<br />

group called Ac�ve Boulder with assistance from the Boulder<br />

Chamber. Other encouragement efforts include the Buffalo<br />

Classic and Circle Boulder by Bike events. Community Cycles,<br />

Singletrack Mountain Bike Adventures and Y-Riders <strong>of</strong>fer youthoriented<br />

programming to foster responsibility, peer support and<br />

to keep young people ac�ve in cycling. Boulder’s investment has<br />

paid <strong>of</strong>f. Bike use and other non-automo�ve modes <strong>of</strong> transporta�on<br />

have limited the growth in vehicular miles traveled in<br />

Boulder to approximately 1 percent annually since 1990.<br />

Most Significant Recent Accomplishment: Construc�on <strong>of</strong> the<br />

45-acre Valmont Bicycle Park began in 2009. The park will have<br />

free access and <strong>of</strong>fer singletracks for mountain bikers, pump<br />

tracks for BMX riders, and cyclocross circuits for all skill levels.<br />

Most Compelling Community Sta�s�c: Boulder’s bicycle commu�ng<br />

share is 9.9 percent –18 �mes the na�onal average and<br />

the highest among Bicycle Friendly Communi�es surveyed by the<br />

2008 <strong>American</strong> Community Survey.<br />

Best Result <strong>of</strong> Designa�on: Boulder’s City Council takes biking<br />

seriously and has expanded bike paths and planned a Transit<br />

Village, a cu�ng edge neighborhood that will serve as a central<br />

hub for bike, bus and hoped-for future passenger train traffic.<br />

The village centers on a car-free lifestyle. The promo�on <strong>of</strong> the<br />

car-free village has helped increase Boulder’s usage rate for bus,<br />

bike and walking transporta�on to 28 percent — three �mes the<br />

na�onal average.<br />
