Community Highlights: Mesa is parcipang in an exhausve
study with the Regional Council to idenfy all gaps in their bicyclefriendliness
and to adopt a plan. The study will also provide a plan
for connecng bicycle networks between all of the communies
in the region. Mesa has defined and ouied signage for three
bicycle networks: the arterial street network, the mid-secon collector
street network, and the irrigaon canal and power easement
trail network. A bicycle bridge was constructed to allow passage
between Mesa and Chandler. Last year, 19 miles of on-street bicycle
lanes were added – bringing the total to 128 miles. Mesa connues
its efforts to educate the public about bicycle safety and awareness
through school and community programs.
Community Highlights: In Mountain View 100 percent of arterial
streets are ouied with bike lanes or paved shoulders. The City’s
most significant bicycle-related investment is the Stevens Creek
Trail, a major community and recreaon corridor. Approximately
4.8 miles of the trail have been completed from Shoreline at Mountain
View to Sleeper Avenue. The next extension of the trail will be
completed in Fall 2011 and will reunite the east and west sides of
the city that were divided in the 1960s as a result of Highway 85.
Posive Outcome from Receiving a BFC Designaon: Members
of the City’s Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Commiee report that
the number of cyclists in Mountain View has increased, based on
observaons throughout town and their surveys along the Steven
Creek Trail and the Mayfield-Whisman Bicycle Boulevard.
NEW Community Highlights: Naperville has focused on providing
a bike network that will encourage residents and visitors to
choose to access desnaons, especially the Metra Staons, by
bike instead of car. The city installed a pedestrian and bicycle bridge
across Illinois Route 59, a six-lane strategic regional arterial. The
bridge has significantly improved bicycle and pedestrian mobility to
several key desnaons in southwest Naperville, including a high
school, library, sports complex, Park District facilies, and retail
establishments. The interconnected network of on-street and offstreet
pathways has been established.
Most Compelling Community Stasc: In a 2008 bicycle survey
conducted by Metra, a mode-share of approximately 3.6 percent
commuters access the Naperville Metra Staon by bicycle. In the
last 6 years there has been an increase of 30 percent in the number
of bicycles parked at the Metra Staons.
