Community Highlights: Bellingham was selected as the first <strong>of</strong><br />
four communi�es na�onwide for the TravelSmart Individualized<br />
Marke�ng pilot project. Bellingham reduced drive-alone trips by 8<br />
percent and increased bicycle, walking and bus trips at the same<br />
rate. Bellingham is a<br />

�on Concurrency Management Ordinance, to focus on mul�modal<br />
transporta�on.<br />
Most Significant Recent Accomplishment: Bellingham Public Works<br />
Engineering Department u�lized cu�ng-edge technologies to install<br />
bicycle facili�es in environmentally sensi�ve areas. One project<br />
installed porous concrete bike lanes for drainage and infiltra�on as<br />
the primary stormwater system for the roadway. A second project<br />
included a 1,000 foot bike lane link through a high-quality wetland<br />
area by using an innova�ve embankment design to support the<br />
bike lanes while filtering run<strong>of</strong>f. Three addi�onal bike lane projects<br />
will be completed in 2010.<br />
Most Compelling Community Sta�s�c: Bellingham’s 2008 Individualized<br />
Marke�ng project covered one-third <strong>of</strong> Bellingham households,<br />
producing an increase in bicycle trips <strong>of</strong> 35 percent since<br />
2007, and in 2009, 8,600 people par�cipated in Bike to Work and<br />
School Day.<br />
Posi�ve Outcome from Receiving a BFC Designa�on: The local<br />
newspaper increased coverage on bicycling issues, and there has<br />
been a drama�c increase in the number <strong>of</strong> par�cipants in Bike to<br />
Work and School Day.<br />

Community Highlights: Bend has 26 roundabouts, seven<br />
pathway river bridges, a bike tunnel and 90 percent <strong>of</strong> its arterial<br />
streets have bike lanes. Students are encouraged to ride their<br />
bikes to school on Bike to School Tuesdays from May to June. Bend<br />
ini�ated a seven-route transit system in fall <strong>of</strong> 2006. All <strong>of</strong> Bend’s<br />
buses are equipped with bike racks, and bike use on transit has<br />
increased drama�cally since 2007. Bend has hosted na�onal cycling<br />
events like the USA Cycling Na�onal Cyclocross Championships and<br />
the USA Cycling Road Na�onal Championships.<br />
Most Significant Recent Accomplishment: The town finished a<br />
complete streets project on Galveston Avenue: including sidewalk<br />
construc�on, bike lane striping and other traffic calming features.<br />
