Community Highlights: Tucson has passed a policy to include bike<br />
lanes on all new street construc�on, as well as on all reconstruc�on<br />
projects. A Bikeway Improvement Program and a Spot Bicycle/Pedestrian<br />
Improvements List have been implemented with the help<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Tucson-Pima County Bicycle Advisory Commi�ee. The Safe<br />
Routes to Schools Program held 74 rodeos and reached over 2,000<br />
schoolchildren in 2009. The free bicycle safety classes con�nue<br />
to be popular, with over 600 par�cipants a�ending Smart Cycling,<br />
Commu�ng or Kids Safety classes. The Brad P. Gorman Memorial<br />
Bikeway Fund, which was started in memory <strong>of</strong> a cyclist who was<br />
killed while riding his bicycle, has helped fund regional Share the<br />
Road guides, helmets and lights.<br />
Most Significant Recent Accomplishment: In the past year, 60<br />
miles <strong>of</strong> bikeways have been added or are under construc�on,<br />
increasing the regional bikeway miles to 817. Fi�een new HAWK<br />
lights, they help cyclists cross busy streets, have been installed,<br />
and the Tucson HAWK inven�on was approved in the Manual on<br />
Uniform Traffic Control Devices. The city installed their first bike<br />
box, two bike corrals and is designing 27 miles <strong>of</strong> bicycle boulevards.<br />
The diversion program in 2009 educated 299 bicyclists who<br />
received a cita�on for a traffic infrac�on. In addi�on, four <strong>of</strong> the<br />
major employers in the region have ins�tuted or expanded a bike<br />
share program.<br />
Most Compelling Community Sta�s�c: With more than 817 miles<br />
<strong>of</strong> bikeway facili�es in the region, most residents in the Tucson<br />
metro area have access to a bike facility within 1/3-mile <strong>of</strong> their<br />
house or place <strong>of</strong> work.<br />
Posi�ve Outcome from Receiving a BFC Designa�on: The BFC<br />
designa�on enhanced bicycle tourism in the region and has given<br />
the Tucson economy a much needed boost. Tens <strong>of</strong> thousands <strong>of</strong><br />
people par�cipate annually in the El Tour de Tucson, Tour <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Tucson Mountains, Arizona cycling races, triathlons, Mul�ple Sclerosis<br />
Rides, and other benefit events.<br />

Community Highlights: Michigan’s economy is heav-<br />
ily dependent on the automobile but Ann Arbor is commi�ed to<br />
increasing bicycle and pedestrian op�ons. The City Council has earmarked<br />
5 percent <strong>of</strong> its state gasoline and weight tax revenues for<br />
non-motorized transporta�on improvements, par�cularly on-road<br />
bicycle lanes.<br />

Most Compelling Community Sta�s�c: The 2000 United Stated<br />
Census showed that 2.4 percent <strong>of</strong> the 114,100 residents <strong>of</strong> Ann<br />
Arbor at that �me commuted to work by bike. The United States<br />
Census <strong>American</strong> Fac�inder reported that more than 4 percent <strong>of</strong><br />
Ann Arbor employees commuted to work by other means, including<br />
by bike, in 2005-2007.<br />
Posi�ve Outcome from Receiving a BFC Designa�on: The adjoining<br />
communites <strong>of</strong> Saline, Ypislan� and Pi�sfield Township have<br />
developed bike system plans to connect to the work underway in<br />
Ann Arbor.<br />
