Eugene has a 7 percent bicycle mode<br />
share – more than ten times the national<br />
average. This high rate <strong>of</strong> ridership can<br />
be attributed to a well-connected on-<br />
and <strong>of</strong>f-street bicycle network, supportive<br />
city policies, and an engaged bicycle<br />
advocacy community.<br />

The weeklong compe��on is conducted every October.<br />
Companies compete to see which workplace has more employees<br />
who bike, walk or take the bus to work. The city also celebrates bicycling<br />
through Kidical Mass, the Spring Roll Alley Cat Food Drive,<br />
Bike Polo, Bike Brigade Mobile Bike Dance Par�es, and more.<br />
Most Significant Recent Accomplishment: The City <strong>of</strong> Eugene<br />
constructed a Ped/Bike bridge over the I-5 Freeway that connects<br />
to Springfield, Ore. Currently underway is a major shared-use path<br />
connec�ng South Eugene to the downtown area, an investment <strong>of</strong><br />
more than $350,000.<br />
Most Compelling Community Sta�s�c: Every middle school in the<br />
community <strong>of</strong>fers a bicycle safety educa�on program, and more<br />
than 9,000 students par�cipated in bicycling and walking safety<br />
events last year.<br />

Community Highlights: Fort Collins makes bike commu�ng easy<br />
with its integrated on- and <strong>of</strong>f-street bicycle network and its<br />
informa�ve Web site www.fcgov.com/bicycling – complete with<br />
shared lane marking informa�on, bike project updates, educa�onal<br />
materials, events and federal transporta�on updates. The city’s flat<br />
terrain, 280-plus miles <strong>of</strong> wide bike lanes, and 30-plus miles <strong>of</strong> bike<br />
trails that follow the scenic Poudre River and Spring Creek make<br />
commu�ng a breeze. The surrounding vicinity <strong>of</strong>fers incredible road<br />
biking – flat prairie, country roads and steep climbs. There is also<br />
great mountain biking nearby.<br />
Most Significant Recent Accomplishment: The Bike Library has<br />
4,300 patrons and patrons have cycled 46,684 miles. That’s 21 metric<br />
tons <strong>of</strong> CO2 not released into the atmosphere. Thanks to the<br />
Fort Collins Bike Co-op, Fort Collins now has 20 <strong>League</strong> Cer�fied<br />
Instructors.<br />
Most Compelling Community Sta�s�c: The Census Bureau<br />
reported that 7.4 percent commuters go by bike, up 2 percent in<br />
two years. The 2009 Bike to Work Day a�racted over 30 local business<br />
sponsors and 4,000 par�cipants.<br />
Posi�ve Outcome from Receiving a BFC Designa�on: The BFC<br />
designa�on has helped brand Fort Collins as a bicycle friendly community<br />
to its residents and visitors. We like to say, “In Fort Collins,<br />
bicycling is a way <strong>of</strong> life!”<br />

with respect to bicycle infrastructure, safety, education,<br />
