NEW Community Highlights: Lakewood has been termed the<br />
Gateway to the Rockies — it links the foothills <strong>of</strong> the mountains to<br />
downtown Denver and provides excellent commu�ng opportuni-<br />
�es. This diverse terrain gives riders <strong>of</strong> all abili�es excellent opportuni�es<br />
to mountain and road bike in a safe environment. Bike to<br />
Work Day is ac�vely promoted through a variety <strong>of</strong> media outlets,<br />
such as adver�sing on buses and bus stops, radio spots, a Bike to<br />
Work Day Web site and posters distributed to recrea�on centers<br />
and local merchants.<br />
Most Compelling Sta�s�c: According to the most recent census<br />
conducted by the Denver Regional Council <strong>of</strong> Government (DRCOG)<br />
1.7 percent <strong>of</strong> the popula�on in the Lakewood area ac�vely ride —<br />
approximately 2,400 <strong>of</strong> its residents.<br />

Community Highlights: La Crosse will open its Grand River Sta�on<br />
Mixed Use Transit Center in spring 2010. The project includes live/<br />
work lo�s, 72 units <strong>of</strong> affordable housing and ample bicycle parking.<br />
La Crosse will open several new bike trails in 2010, with the Isle<br />
La Plume Trail par�ally funded with a Wisconsin DNR Trails Grant<br />
– and a segment <strong>of</strong> the Northside Connector trail par�ally funded<br />
with TE funds — which will be�er link La Crosse and Onalaska. The<br />
ci�es cooperated on added bike lanes, and more bike lanes are<br />
planned. The City received $545,000 ARRA funds to reconstruct<br />
an exis�ng bike path and provide a Safe Route To Southern Bluffs<br />
Elementary School. La Crosse was awarded TE funds to help create a<br />
city-specific Bicycle Plan. Planning is expected to begin next spring and<br />
should provide the blueprint for the city to achieve BFC Gold status.<br />

Community Highlights: Lexington-Faye�e County has 60 miles <strong>of</strong><br />
bike facili�es within its urban core and is surrounded by hundreds<br />
<strong>of</strong> miles <strong>of</strong> low traffic, well-paved rural roads that a�ract touring<br />
cyclists. Since 2007, the county secured more than $20 million in<br />
funding for bike projects and plans to add 40 miles <strong>of</strong> bike lanes<br />
and trails. The county hosts two free bike-sharing fleets and a<br />
program that provides refurbished bicycles to refugees arriving in<br />
Lexington-Faye�e. More than 50 local police <strong>of</strong>ficers are cer�fied<br />
for bike patrol, and EMS workers now ride bikes when patrolling<br />
downtown events. More than 5,000 people a�ended the Second<br />
Sunday ciclovia-style event. The county provides police escorts for<br />
a monthly Second Sunday ride that showcases new bike lanes and<br />
trails to novice cyclists.<br />
Most Compelling Community Sta�s�c: Approximately 10,000<br />
people par�cipated in local bike rides and events last year.<br />

Community Highlights: According to the 2000 census, 1.3 percent<br />
<strong>of</strong> Lawrence’s popula�on regularly bike to work — almost three<br />
�mes the na�onal average. Lawrence has dedicated September<br />
to bicycle educa�on for children; and May is Bicycle Awareness<br />
Month. The city educates drivers and cyclists on the e�que�e <strong>of</strong><br />
sharing the road through real-life demonstra�ons, teaching hand<br />
signals and distribu�ng brochures. Lawrence recently reviewed<br />
their bicycle network in prepar�on for a new bike plan, iden�fying<br />
goals and objec�ves for bicycle and pedestrian facili�es.<br />
