Community Highlights: Gilbert implemented a bicycle plan into all<br />
<strong>of</strong> its design standards. Currently it has facili�es on 100 percent <strong>of</strong><br />
its arterial streets. The town partnered with a local Ben & Jerry’s<br />
store to <strong>of</strong>fer cer�ficates for free ice cream to kids who wear helmets<br />
while bicycling.<br />
Most Significant Recent Accomplishment: Gilbert a�ained federal<br />
grants to fund several signalized crossing improvements and canal<br />
bridges. The town partnered with 15 local schools to par�cipate in<br />
the Safe Routes to School program. Gilbert also held a successful<br />
community bike ride and Bike to Work Day.<br />
Most Compelling Community Sta�s�c: The town handed out over<br />
500 safety blinkers and steel cable bike locks to local school children<br />
who par�cipated in Bike to School week and the Bike Rodeo.<br />

Community Highlights: The Flagstaff Urban Trails System (FUTS)<br />
is a comprehensive network <strong>of</strong> trails that provides transporta�on<br />
and recrea�onal opportuni�es throughout the city. There are more<br />
than 40 miles <strong>of</strong> FUTS trails in existence, and long-range plans<br />
depict a system that will eventually include more than 100 miles<br />
<strong>of</strong> trail. Flagstaff voters recently approved a sales tax that provides<br />
$800,000 per year for 20 years for bicycle, pedestrian and Safe<br />
Routes to School improvements.<br />

NEW Community Highlights: Grand Rapids’ bicycling culture has<br />
been developing rapidly. The community has a government and<br />
a city staff that ac�vely promote bicycling in the city. The network <strong>of</strong><br />
mul�use trails and on on-street facili�es con�nues to grow.<br />
Most Significant Recent Accomplishment: In 2008 Grand Rapids<br />
completed Phase Two <strong>of</strong> the M-6 Trail, a 9.7 mile mul�-use trail that<br />
connects the community to a highly-developed bike trail network.<br />
In April 2009, more than 200 people par�cipated in the first ever Bicycle<br />
Summit which was held in conjunc�on with the development <strong>of</strong><br />
the Grand Rapids master plan, Green Grand Rapids. In 2009 the city<br />
approved development <strong>of</strong> the first in-city mountain bike park.<br />
Most Compelling Community Sta�s�c: There are more than 255<br />
miles <strong>of</strong> shared-use path or bike path in the Greater Grand Rapids<br />
area, and 14 percent <strong>of</strong> area roadways have signed bicycle routes<br />
or shoulders wide enough to accommodate bicyclists.<br />

NEW Community Highlights: Educa�on and encouragement <strong>of</strong><br />
bicycling have been at the center <strong>of</strong> Greensboro’s bicycle-friendly<br />
efforts. The city hosts a Web site on sharing the road with a specific<br />
sec�on dedicated to sharing the road. The Share the Road billboard<br />
has been con�nuously installed on the sides <strong>of</strong> at least 10 GTA<br />
buses since October 2007, and 8 GTA buses are carrying the Coexist<br />
banner. A bicycle educa�onal program is taught in the 4th grade.<br />
First grade students are given the opportunity to a�end Safety Town,<br />
<strong>of</strong>fered through Greensboro Police Department during the summer.<br />
Most Significant Recent Accomplishment: On one <strong>of</strong> the primary<br />
routes leading into downtown, a four-lane sec�on <strong>of</strong> road was converted<br />
a�er resurfacing into a three-lane sec�on with bike lanes. It<br />
now flows into a sec�on that has been traffic calmed.<br />
