It must be disconcerting speaking to an audience already very familiar
with your company. In the case of Condor Ferries managing director
Simon Edsall, the September Chamber lunch proved to be the perfect
platform to address some of the misconceptions about his business and
his speech gave a valuable insight into one of Guernsey’s most
important carriers of people and cargo. Jon Taylor reports.

Keep looking at the horizon’ was a
familiar command from my father,
who deemed it to be the best way of
avoiding seasickness as he navigated
his way through a force six or more during
another family sailing holiday to Brittany. as it
turned out, of course, it worked and from that
day hence, whenever my family has taken an
adventure via condor, i explain to my children
that the best way to avoid feeling seasick is to fix
your gaze upon a stable external reference point
such as the horizon or some outcrop of land.
condor representatives are probably
tired of hearing the travails of passengers
who’ve experienced the ills of travelling by
sea, but without condor i probably couldn’t
afford to get to the continent with a family
of four. likewise, many chamber members
wouldn’t receive their produce and goods
with such regularity and efficiency.
condor was founded by a Guernseyman, peter
Dorey but the company was developed by the
Norman family. Following a rather traumatic
period operationally in the late 1990s with the
introduction of condor express, both Guernsey
