Travel with a small group to explore one of the most beautiful collections<br />

of more than 70 native woodland wildflowers on the east coast including<br />

Virginia bluebells, trillium, Jacob’s ladder and more. Enjoy the mile stroll<br />

through the 50-acre preserve along Grubb Run in Lancaster County.<br />

The NCC East 40 <strong>Community</strong> Garden is a place for aspiring and seasoned gardeners to further their<br />

knowledge with a mixture of in-class and outdoor learning experiences. This new education<br />

environment is located at the Bethlehem <strong>Campus</strong> situated in the field east of the parking lots just off of<br />

Green Pond Road. The current 10,000 square-foot garden was designed and constructed by NCC<br />

students, faculty, and staff during the 2010 academic year. Part of the mission for the East 40 <strong>Community</strong><br />

Garden is to continue the school’s commitment to the community by offering practical, hands on classes.<br />

NEW! garden Trip: explore the gardens of Chanticleer<br />

Travel with a small group to explore one of the Main Line’s most beautiful<br />

gardens, Chanticleer. The terraced landscape was designed by Landscape<br />

Architect, Thomas Sears, and today the garden also features a stream,<br />

woodland, and vegetable garden. Please dress to be outside and wear<br />

weather-worthy shoes. Be sure to sign up early as seating is limited. Price<br />

includes admission. Further class details to be emailed prior to start date.<br />

Instructor Highlight<br />

Lorna Midgelow-Yearwood has the zeal and passion of a “born-again” organic vegetable gardener. For many years she was unable to grow<br />

vegetables through lack of sun. Now, happily in full sunshine, she is entering her fifth year of serious backyard farming! She is mainly a self-taught<br />

gardener, through the obsessive reading of many books and plenty of hands-on successes and failures in the garden. Over the past couple of years<br />

she has attended a multitude of commercial organic vegetable and fruit classes, plus she volunteers at a local <strong>Community</strong> Sustained Agriculture<br />

(CSA) farm. In an attempt to be more self-reliant and reduce her environmental footprint on the earth, she grows a wide variety of crops in her<br />

backyard in Springtown, PA. By teaching this series of classes she hopes to help and inspire others to do the same. Check out her blog at<br />

<strong>Community</strong> Garden Class Notes: Classes are a combination of classroom lecture and out in the garden hands-on experience. Please dress appropriately for the<br />

weather and for playing in the dirt! Classes are held rain or shine.<br />

Orientation for east 40 <strong>Community</strong> gardeners<br />

This is an annual course for all individuals who will be gardening a plot at<br />

NCC’s East 40 <strong>Community</strong> Garden. Topics to be discussed are: the garden’s<br />

position on organics, understanding what it means to be a community<br />

gardener, and a general introduction to the garden and its resources. The<br />

tuition for the course will cover plot fees for the year.<br />

Planning makes perfect! Get a jump on the growing season by learning<br />

about the factors on how to PLAN the perfect vegetable garden. Proper<br />

advanced planning will greatly increase your gardens productivity. Topics<br />

covered will include: Setting realistic goals for your garden; choosing<br />

which veggies to grow; how much to grow; crop groups & rotation; how to<br />

spread out the harvest with succession planting; seed selection and more.<br />

Building on some or all of the planning factors learned in Part 1, this class<br />

is where you get to lay out your own garden and get ready to order seeds!<br />

This class is not for the fainthearted and includes some basic math to work<br />

out desired veggie yields; garden space requirements; and timing for sowing<br />

seeds, transplanting and harvesting. We will work interactively to plan<br />

YOUR garden. You will leave the class with a plan for your own vegetable<br />

garden! Class Size is limited — register early!<br />
