Woodworking — Beyond the Basics<br />

Master Craftsman, Jeffrey Boerner takes you into the more advanced and<br />

exciting techniques of woodworking. You will choose from two projects<br />

and team up with one other classmate to work together as you design,<br />

layout, produce cut lists, choose species of lumber and then move to<br />

fabrication and finishing. Projects are selected so that you can learn and<br />

explore more advanced topics such as overlaying with exotic veneers,<br />

dovetail and other specialized joinery, woodturning and much more. It<br />

is best if you have completed Woodworking Basics or had prior experiences<br />

evaluated by the instructor to make sure you will enjoy this more<br />

advanced class. Enrollment is limited to 12.<br />

Woodturning<br />

Students will learn the basics of the wood lathe and how to build jigs to<br />

do special operations like quarter column fluting and duplicating during<br />

this 9-hour seminar. As an added bonus, Master Craftsman Jeffrey Boerner<br />

will divulge a little known trick you can use to impress your family. Let<br />

them try and figure out how you did it! Enroll early as enrollment is<br />

the Fab Lab’s embroidery and professional sewing machines. You will<br />

be given the fabric and instructions to create a project that utilizes both<br />

machines. The third week of class, if you have completed your project, you<br />

may bring in a project from home that you started but are having trouble<br />

completing. This class may be just the catalyst you need to start a sewing<br />

or embroidery business. We will discuss business ideas and how your<br />

Open Lab is a convenient and inexpensive way to work with an instructor,<br />

independently to develop a product, or enhance your skills. Fees are<br />

$5.00 per hour for computer use, $10.00 per hour for equipment use, and<br />

$35.00 per hour ($30 for NCC or LU students) for One-on-One Instruction.<br />

One-on-One sessions must be scheduled with the specific instructor.<br />

Payment is due in form of a check or credit card at time of use.<br />
