Designed for students who have completed MLP7, we will learn to write<br />

and/or recognize more commonly used Chinese characters and words. At<br />

this level, students will enrich their ability of reading skills. Particularly, the<br />

students are expected to significantly improve their writing skills. They are<br />

expected to write comprehensive articles in Chinese and touch more Chinese<br />

Culture and Thoughts. The course is designed for children who grow<br />

up in US but has exposure to Chinese speaking environment at home.<br />

Students will learn a basic knowledge of 193 Chinese characters, 228<br />

words and expressions, and 18 basic sentences.<br />

Basic Chinese I<br />

Designed for the English speaking student who has little experience<br />

Drawing and Painting — HuaXia Chinese School<br />

Students will learn to draw and paint animals, people, and things found in<br />

nature. We will work mainly with watercolors and acrylics to learn various<br />

painting techniques. We will also work with colored pencils, markers and<br />

pastels. For students ages 7 and older.<br />

Chinese Speech and Debate<br />

This course will be focused on various public speaking skills in speech and<br />

debate. Throughout the fall semester, we will explore the various types of<br />

public speaking events, like declamation, humorous interpretation, dramatic<br />

interpretation, and extemporaneous speaking. In addition, there will<br />

be an introduction to different debate forms; Lincoln Douglass Debate and<br />

Public Forum Debate. We will give students opportunities to present one<br />

type of public speech during the semester. This speech could be either in<br />

English or in Chinese. During the spring semester, the team will move more<br />

into the Chinese Debate form to prepare for the HXSC tournament in April.<br />

Students will utilize their public speaking skills to aid them in their Chinese<br />

debates. This course is open to students from 4th grade and above.<br />

This course is designed to prepare students in, or going into, middle<br />

school, for the National Mathcounts Competition held in the spring of<br />

every school year. Along with learning math concepts and gaining an<br />

immense amount of practice, students will learn tricks and techniques<br />

required to gain an edge in the competition. After competition, the course<br />

will also provide students going into high school with an in depth SAT and<br />

PSAT math preparation.<br />

Traditional Chinese martial arts<br />

The goal of this class is to develop a balance of strength, flexibility, coordination,<br />

and power that provides a physical and mental challenge which<br />

leads to a healthy body and self-defense skills. The class will teach Chinese<br />

Shao-Lin basics and short forms and will lay a good foundation for further<br />

advancement in the second semester.<br />
