Designed for students who have completed MLP7, we will learn to write 

and/or recognize more commonly used Chinese characters and words. At 

this level, students will enrich their ability of reading skills. Particularly, the 

students are expected to significantly improve their writing skills. They are 

expected to write comprehensive articles in Chinese and touch more Chinese 

Culture and Thoughts. The course is designed for children who grow 

up in US but has exposure to Chinese speaking environment at home.

BiaoZhun ZhouWen 1 

The course will teach beginning level Chinese including both Chinese 

words and Pinyin. It fits the beginning level students who like to learn 

both Chinese words and Pinyin at the same time or need the help of Pinyin 

to learn Chinese words. It may also serve as a transitional step before 

entering MaLiPing 1.

For students who have completed BiaoZhun ZhouWen 1. The course will 

teach beginning level Chinese including both Chinese words and Pinyin. It 

fits the beginning level students who like to learn both Chinese words and 

Pinyin at the same time or need the help of Pinyin to learn Chinese words.

Designed for students who have two years of Chinese learning. Students 

will use the third textbook of Standard Chinese - Revised Edition, a Workbook 

A and a Workbook B, and a CD-ROM. Throughout the books, English 

is used as an aid to learn Chinese. All lessons are transcribed into Pinyin. 

Students will learn a basic knowledge of 193 Chinese characters, 228 

words and expressions, and 18 basic sentences. 





Designed for students who have three years of Chinese learning. Students 

will use the fourth textbook of Standard Chinese - Revised Edition, a 

Workbook A and a Workbook B, and a CD-ROM. Throughout the books, 

English is used as an aid to learn Chinese. All lessons are transcribed into 

Pinyin. Students will learn a basic knowledge of 299 Chinese characters, 

398 words and expressions, and 30 basic sentences.

Designed for students who have completed Level 7, we will learn to use 

167 commonly used Chinese characters, 467 commonly used words and 

150 polysemous words. At this level, students will enrich their ability of 

reading skills by reading Chinese Reading Book which contains 60 articles.

Basic Chinese I 

Designed for the English speaking student who has little experience 

with the Chinese Language. This course will provide an introduction to 

the Chinese culture and basic language skills including the Chinese 

phonetic system, characters, phrases, sentence structure and frequently 

used conversation.

Drawing and Painting — HuaXia Chinese School 

Students will learn to draw and paint animals, people, and things found in 

nature. We will work mainly with watercolors and acrylics to learn various 

painting techniques. We will also work with colored pencils, markers and 

pastels. For students ages 7 and older.

Chinese Speech and Debate 

This course will be focused on various public speaking skills in speech and 

debate. Throughout the fall semester, we will explore the various types of 

public speaking events, like declamation, humorous interpretation, dramatic 

interpretation, and extemporaneous speaking. In addition, there will 

be an introduction to different debate forms; Lincoln Douglass Debate and 

Public Forum Debate. We will give students opportunities to present one 

type of public speech during the semester. This speech could be either in 

English or in Chinese. During the spring semester, the team will move more 

into the Chinese Debate form to prepare for the HXSC tournament in April. 

Students will utilize their public speaking skills to aid them in their Chinese 

debates. This course is open to students from 4th grade and above.

math Count 

This course is designed to prepare students in, or going into, middle 

school, for the National Mathcounts Competition held in the spring of 

every school year. Along with learning math concepts and gaining an 

immense amount of practice, students will learn tricks and techniques 

required to gain an edge in the competition. After competition, the course 

will also provide students going into high school with an in depth SAT and 

PSAT math preparation.

Traditional Chinese martial arts 

The goal of this class is to develop a balance of strength, flexibility, coordination, 

and power that provides a physical and mental challenge which 

leads to a healthy body and self-defense skills. The class will teach Chinese 

Shao-Lin basics and short forms and will lay a good foundation for further 

advancement in the second semester.
