This oral history collection documents the recent spatial transformations of one American
city and traces the relation of those changes to the memories, personal histories, and aspirations
of the women and men who have witnessed them firsthand. Employing both documentary and
oral-historical methods, the study works both at the detailed level of the single block and the
broad level of the metropolitan region. Within the general study of the city, individual
neighborhoods are reviewed in greater depth, including, in this section of the research, the
neighborhood called Benton Park in near south St. Louis city with geographic borders of
Gravois, Cherokee and Potomac, Jefferson, and Interstate 55.
