JŪRMALA
ResoRt histoRy
● During the 13th to 16th centuries most of the
current Jurmala city territory was included in
former Livonian order state. Small fishermen
villages started to emerge along seashore.
● The oldest part of Jurmala is Sloka. Sloka on
the bank of river Lielupe flourished in the 17th
century during governance of Duke Jacob. Kilns
of copper, glass and lime, also mills started to
operate here.
● Kauguri: it is the part of Jurmala where most
of Jurmala’s inhabitants live. The old name of
fishermen village, Kaugern, first appeared in
documents in the 16th century and suggests
an idea that the first inhabitants here were
Livs.
● In its turn first summer residents in the end of
the 18th century that lived in Kauguri village
houses, mostly were Courland’s landlords.
This fact allows coming to a conclusion that
Jurmala is one the oldest seaside resorts in
Europe.
● Up to 19th century fishery was the main
branch of occupation for the inhabitants of
Jurmala. Fresh smoked fish was delivered to
cottagers and was sent also to Riga.
● Bathing places of Jurmala gained popularity in
the 19th century.

● The beginning of the 19th century is the
dawn of Jurmala resort history. After the
war between Russia and France in 1812, the
wounded Russian army officers came to take
rest at local fishermen houses.
● The first bathes’ establishment “Marienbad”
in Dubulti was opened in 1870. Doctor Johan
Christian Nordstrom started to use climate
therapy as a course of treatment; he indicated
jogging along the beach, sea water treatments,
as well as physical activities in fresh air.
● The end of the19th century – beginning of
the 20th century was the time when resort
started flourishing; it was the time when most
of health establishments, wooden architecture
houses and resort infrastructure were built. In
those days bathing houses with bathtubs of
warmed sea water were built for the purpose
of healing treatments and relaxation.
● In the beginning of the 19th century when
no bathing suits were known, separate
swimming hours for men and women were
set. Since 1897 special hours for swimming
in bathing suits were introduced – bathing
suit consisted of trousers up to knee, and a
sleeveless shirt with a belt. In 1914 swimming
without bathing suits was banned.
The united Jurmala city was established on the November 11, 1959
merging 3 territories - Rigas Jurmala, Sloka and Ķemeri.
● In 1844 the first steamboat in Jurmala started
to operate and brought approximately 150
passengers at a time. Later five steamboats
were bringing people from Riga and Jelgava.
The biggest steamboat “Undīne” started to
run along the river in 1857, and was able to
pick up approximately 500 persons. A street in
Majori was named Undīnes in the honour of
the steamboat.
● The opening of the railway line “Riga - Tukums”
in 1877 was a notable event as it contributed
to the development and growth of Ķemeri
resort and Jurmala bathing places.
● The first iron bridge was built in 1876. During
the World War I the bridge was detonated
when Russian army draw back. In 1922 a new
railway bridge was opened, and again it was
detonated in the end of World War II, it was
rebuilt in 1949.
● “Jurmala’s gold” or famous strawberries
came from Jurmala – the part of the city
called Melluži. Fruitful strawberry gardens
with high quality berries were located
there. Seeds of strawberries were brought
from France, but ripe berries were
delivered not only to Riga, but also to St.
Petersburg.
● Ķemeri region with its curative qualities
of sulphur springs is well known since
18th century. The first bathing house was
built on state land in 1838. This land was
allocated to the needs of sulphur springs
vulnerary by the tsar Nikolay the 1st. This
was the year of resort’s foundation. Thus
Ķemeri originally developed as a balneological
resort, care of which was soon taken
by the state.
● Resort was wide known in the Russian
Empire; in 1912 a direct railroad line Ķemeri –
Moscow was opened. For a connection with
Jaunķemeri beach, an electric tram started to
operate.
● In 1920 city rights with the name of Rigas
Jurmala were granted to the current territory of
Jurmala from Priedaine to Kauguri.
● In summer of 1950 as much as 29 sanatoriums
and 36 rest houses were open in Jurmala.
In its turn, in 1980-ies Jurmala according to
the amount of organized guests, ranked 3rd
after famous resorts - Sochi and Yalta. It was
the time when in Jurmala 105 sanatoriums,
guest houses, recreation and creative activities’
houses were open, and they welcomed more
than 300 000 persons a year.

Seaside resort Jurmala will certainly become your traditional vocation

In winter Jurmala attracts guests by
skiing along snowy beach, breathing
curative fresh air, as well as relaxing
in SPA centres or Līvu Aquapark. In
spring, when nature is awakening,
there comes a time for bird watching
in nature parks, rejuvenating in resort
hotels for special package prices.
Summer teases vocationers with a
warm sea, active beach life, concerts
and festivals, colourful culture and
sport events and surely romantic
sunsets….
Along with autumn a time for
inspiration and dreaming comes. That
is why artistic and bohemic people

A big treasure of city are natural resources located in its territory – ionized sea air and air
of pine tree woods that is enriched with phytonicide, quartz sand on the beach, mineral
waters (sulphur hydrogen, bromine and sodium chloride), healing turf and sapropel mud
that improve mental and physical comfort, as well as contributes to recovery of health. Due
to natural conditions and local natural healing resources, Jurmala can be proud of having
two kinds of resorts in one place – balneological and maritime climate resorts.
For busy people Jurmala spa hotels, resort
rehabilitation establishments and sanatoriums
offer resort rehabilitation and SPA treatments,
recreation. Combined courses offer to reach the
best result in a short time. <strong>City</strong>’s resort establisments
offer complex packages for treatment,
recreation and rehabilitation that include physical
therapy, physiotherapy, water gymnastics,
different kinds of massage, air-climate therapy,
thalassotherapy, salt rooms, horse riding therapy
and other treatments, based on natural resources.
These therapies have already more then 150-year
old traditions.
Spending time in Jurmala gives not only a
positive effect on a physical, but also spiritual
wellbeing, resulting from the change of usual
environment, a big quantity of sunlight, stayaway

BeAch
26 km of Jurmala beach – one of the most
awesome in Europe is covered with white quartz
sand that has been silt up by seashore stream.
Beach is a great place for rest and recovery:
rustle of waves has calming effect; ionized and
phytonicized air has positive impact on breathing
system, walking with bare feet on soft and warm
sea sand during the summer months, massages
your feet.
In Majori and Jaunķemeri a Blue Flag flies
that confirms that the beach is safe, facilitated

and the water is of good quality that is tested
every week. The water in the Gulf of Riga is
not very salty; therefore it is not necessary to
have a shower after bathing. The beach is
divided in active and peaceful rest zones for the
convenience of the guests. Also nudists have
their own part of beautiful beach. The beach
is equipped with dress-changing cabins,
benches; those who enjoy active recreation
have an opportunity to rent equipment for
water sports or play volleyball or football in
free of charge football and volleyball pitches,
children will enjoy several playgrounds, in
summer also several cafes are open on the
beach. For the safety of guests life-saving
stations are operating. In the dune area, as
well as on the beach, toilets are located, and
in several places the paths to the beach are
available for baby carriages and wheelchairs.
cLiMATe
The proximity of the sea ensures city with
moderate climate conditions: winters are mild
here, air temperature around +1°С, summers
are temperate, warm, but not very hot, average
air temperature is +21°С. 50% of the town is
covered with pine trees that clear out the air and
improve its healing quality. Climate in Jurmala is
moderate and soft, that’s why even in hot days
swimming and sunbathing in Jurmala is not
exhaustive.
There are several kinds of climate therapies in
Jurmala: sunbathing, swimming in the sea, sand
bathing (psammotherapy), as well as air therapy.

sunBAThinG
(natural light therapy)
Sunbathing has positive impact on human
organism if it is done correctly according to
medical recommendations. The sun promotes
synthesis of vitamin D and strengthens
body. While sunbathing, it is necessary to
cover head with sunshade or kerchief, also
it is recommended to sunbathe around 10
o’clock when the air is cooler and cleaner or in
evening hours when intensity of sunrays has
decreased and heat does not cause additional
load on heart and blood circulatory system.

The basis of sun dosage is gradual
adaptation of body to sun rays. After sunbathing
it is recommended to have 10 to 20
minutes of rest in shadow, a shower or a bath
in the sea.

(talassotherapy)
Sea therapy (thalassotherapy) is healing and
recreation of organism with sea climate, sea
water and natural sea products.
Nowadays for thalassotherapy procedures
a wide choice of natural sea product’s
cosmetics and newest technologies
are used.
The influence of swimming on your health
depends on water temperature, salt content
and strength of waves. There are also some
recommendations for swimming:
• Swim at noon when the water and the air
are warm enough, as well as 1 to 2 hours after
eating, it is especially referable to persons with
health troubles;
• Healthy people can swim also in the morning
before breakfast;
• Don’t swim in case of strong waves;
• Dry the body with a towel after
swimming.
KRC “Jaunķemeri”
sAnD BAThes (psammotherapy)
Psammotherapy – treatment with hot (40 –
46 oC) sand that can be used during the hot
summer days. The body should be covered
with sand in a layer of 15cm, remaining
uncovered the area where heart is located.
The head must be in shade. The duration of
sand bath must be 20 to 30 minutes. The
treatment increases metabolism, and has
resolving and pain relieving qualities.

AiR TheRAPy
The air is used as a healing factor – air
bathes, walks in open air, as well as sleep by
the open window can be used.
These treatments improve functions of heart,
blood composition, strengthens nervous
system, trains system of thermo regulation,
as well as strengthens body in general. Air
bathes can be taken no faster than one hour
after a meal, also taking into account the
weather conditions, air temperature,
strength of wind as well as average
humidity.
MineRAL wATeR
Most of resort balenological resources are
located in Ķemeri: sulphur, bromine salt, and
natrium mineral waters that are used for
medical purposes, internally and in bathes,
showers and pools. Balneological treatments
are used for healing nerves, heart, support
and motion system disorders, digestive
system problems, as well as gynaecological
problems. It is recommended to wash hands
and face in the sulphur spring “Lizard” in

heALinG MuD
There are 2 types of mud in Jurmala – peat
and sapropel mud that contains a lot of
mineral substances, organic acids, and
microelements. Mud applications are used
• Hypertensic, heart and blood system
disorders
• Central and peripheral nerve system
disorders
• Locomotive system disorders
for treatment and prophylaxis of different
diseases. Mud also has a positive impact
on human wellbeing and decreases the

The house was built in 1920 and presents a
monument of wooden architecture. In two
halls artistic exhibitions, planairs, thematic
events regularly take place. The House of
Artists is a centre of Jurmala department
of Latvian Artists’ Union, that includes
60 professional artists and students. Also
a studio of weaving craft is located in this
house.

A house where famous poetess Aspazija
spent last 10 years of her life it is located in
the narrowest place of Jurmala – in Dubulti,
where is narrow spit of 320 metres dividing
the river and the sea. The house is built in 1903
and is a unique sample of wooden architecture.

In 1996 House of Aspazija was open for visitors
as a memorial site of the poetess.
Museum offers also permanent exposition
“Life and work of Aspazija from 1933 to
1943”; a paedogocial programme “Aspazija
and the ink” is offered for junior grades.
New married couples are invited to have
their first joint cup of coffee in a living room
of Aspazija, and enjoy historical interior of
the room. It is possible to rent premises for
workshops and events.
A monument to Aspazija has been recently
settled in the garden.

Museum was renovated in 2004 and also
offers to have a rest in a cosy café, look into a
souvenir shop and explore several exhibition
halls.
Since 2008 the museum offers permanent
exposition “History of Rigas Jurmala and
Ķemeri resorts”. The exposition shows
important milestones of city’s development:
photos, documents and household objects.
Visual digital exposition helps to feel the
spirit of different centuries in the resort life
through the documental short-films and
music.
In honour of the museum’s 50-year anniversary,
in May 2012 a new exhibition “Resort
fashion” will be opened here. The exhibition
will present museum collection of clothes,
swimmimg suites, accessories, photos and
fashion magazines, that will introduce traditions
of resort life in 19 – 20 centuries.

In a summer cottage that was built in the
end of the 19th century Rainis and Aspazija
lived from 1927 till the death of poet in
1929. In museum there is personal library,
memorial rooms with original interior, as
well as documental videos about the life of
poets.
The museum offers guided excursions,
educational programs and demonstration of
documental short films in Latvian, Russian
and English, as well as a guided bicycle
tour visiting all the life places of Rainis and
Aspazija.

Art gallery exposes interesting and original
exhibition of works that are made in a unique
technique (fluorescent painting effect) –
works start to glitter in a special light, and
a new picture is exposed to a viewer - a
picture that was hidden under the first work.

6 MuseuM oF ResoRT hisToRy
The exposition was created in cooperation
with Jurmala <strong>City</strong> Museum. The main goal
was to tell about the history of a popular
resort beginning from th 19th century, as
well as present different medical equipment
of 70-80-ies.

The museum was established in 1970 as
a folk museum of fishermen collective
farm. Authentic fishermen farms with their
characteristic buildings of 19th to 20th century
are located there; they have been brought
here from different parts of the city.They are
containing living house, barn, net sheds, and
fish smoking house, bath and several other
constructions. A collection of boats, anchors, as
well as biggest collection of ropes in Latvia can
also be found in the museum. Group visitors
can book excursions with rope stranding,
tieing sea knots, patching nets, degustations
of smoked fish with participation of Latvian
tradition groups. There is a special program for
newly married couples.
The museum is located in Ragakāpa Nature
Park’s territory.

Exhibition hall offers changing expositions of
painters’works.
In this former boarding house famous artists
have stayed, leaving the owners their
works, two of which are preserved till
nowadays. On the second floor
workshop of the author is located, but on
the first floor exhibition hall of Inta and
Imants Ozoliņi is placed. Exhibition
exposes also works of Jurmala’s art award
winner of 2007.

The name of the district „Melluzi” is known
already from the 17th century – in 1963
a taverna „Melluzi” was opened here. The
land was owned by the Duke fon Firks
and when in 1827 Carl fon Firks built
a kurhouse here, the place was called
Carlsbad II.
During World War I the kurhouse burnt and
later on this place a park „Melluzi” was made.
In 1930 in the park a wooden concert stage
was built, where not only concerts but also
plays took place.
Now Melluzi stage is one of the two
remained acoustic wooden „shells” in the
Baltics of the beginning of 20th century.

Only the rich citizens could afford hiring educated
architects to design their houses. Mainly they were
Baltic German and Latvian specialists, but there are
also works of Russian, Finnish and other nationality
architects. Since the first half of the 19th century,
popularity of classic architecture remained steady.
There are also buildings of historism, art nouveau,
national romanticism, as well as functionalism in
Jurmala. Another characteristic feature of Jurmala’s
architecture is rich woodcarving decorations on the
facades and roofs of the buildings. New accents
obtained from the historical construction are used
to develop a new and modern style of architecture.

408 buildings are included in the list of architectural
monuments, 7 of which are sacral buildings: 3
Lutheran, 2 Catholic and 2 Orthodox churches.
More than 4000 buildings correspond to historical
building of city. <strong>City</strong>’s architecture can be observed
if you chose one of the eight pedestrian routes that
include 14 culture historical centres of city from
Priedaine to Ķemeri. Every single route reflects the
most characteristic things in area, therefore allowing
guests to feel the individuality and particular
mood of the place. The walking routes along every

One of the biggest treasures of the resort city is its unique wooden architecture.
Being conscious of aesthetic attractiveness and material’s suitability for building
houses of seasonal character, as well as assessing the positive qualities and impact
on human health and environment, in the 19th century and in the first half
of 20th century most of the houses in Jurmala were made of wood, therefore
wooden architecture prevails over other kinds of building in Jurmala.

Kristaps and Auguste Morbergs

The building was built in 1883 and was owned
by the biggest contractor, architect Kristaps
Morbergs. Cottages are architectural monument
of neogothic wooden architecture that got iron
sheet decoration in the end of 19th century. The
house was widened and improved till 1914.
Later it was bequeathed to University of Latvia.
Renovation works of buildings and interior were
summer cottage of Morbergs
carried out in 2007 to 2008, layout and greenery
of 19th century was restored. By the cottage a
garden with exotic plants is located. At the moment
the house is owned by University of Latvia.
More information about the history of cottage,
as well as of talents and work heritage of its
former owner can be obtained during an
excursion in the renovated house. It is possible
to organise conferences, workshops for smaller
groups, social evenings or receptions there.

Dzintari concert hall is one of the most significant cultural monuments, and it offers a wide
program of culture performed by local and international artists.
Variety show and small orchestra performances took place here already in 1897, when
a stage was built in Edinburgh (Dzintari was called Edinburgh till 1922) in the honour of
wedding of the Alexander’s II daughter and Albert, the Duke of Edinburgh. Later famous
orchestras from Petersburg, Warsaw, Latvia and Berlin gave concerts here.
DzinTARi conceRT hALL

In 1936 the building of a concert hall with
690 seats was opened in the new Dzintari
concert garden. The author of the project
was V.Mellenberg. Built in 1960, the openair
stage is a famous place for concerting. In
1960 a summer concert hall with 2000 seats
was built.
The design of metal construction together
with the wooden cladding provides perfect
acoustics. Specialists have evaluated this
place as a unique and in the matters of
acoustics as one of the best in the entire
Europe.
From 2004 to 2006 a reconstruction of
concert hall was was done – a park was
enlarged, the stage and hall - renovated, but
the territory - facilitated.
A lot of popular musicians have performed
here – G.Ginsburg, S.Richter, L.Kogan,
D.Ostreich, M.Rastropovich, Kremerata
Baltica, Bremen Symphony Orchestra and
Latvian National Symphonic Orchestra.
Annual jazz and classic music festivals,
international humour festival “Jurmala”,

Dzintari Forest park
The climate and temperatures in Jurmala are
changable, air contains much ozon and mineral
items – salt, brome and iodine. The climate
strengthens young body, improves metabilism
and blood contents, as well as appetite and
sleeping, it also rejuvenates wellbeing after a
school year and raises immunity.
BeAch
26 km long white sand beach is a great place
where to relax in any season spending great
time with children! On the seacoast the water
is shallow and safe for children building sand
castles, learning to swim and playing.
During autumn storms amber stones and
shells are flushed out on the beach. In the end

of January and in the beginning of February
usually the gulf of Riga freezes over and in
spring large ice hills form on the beach and
gives joy to everyone.
The beach has all the necessary facilities: children
playgrounds, benches, cabines, football and
volleyball pitches, as well as trails to the beach for
baby carriages and disabled. Here you can rent
water bicycles and spend time in beach cafes.
Over Majori and Jaunķemeri beaches a Blue
Flag flies and attests of clean and safe beach
with clean water that is being tested every
week. The first medical aid is available in all
beach lifeguard stations in Bulduri, Dzintari (in
summer), Majori, Dubulti, Melluzi, Kauguri
and Jaunkemeri.
Jurmala is one of the ideal places for children recreation, starting from baby
age. Clear sea air has a very good influence on a child’s organism, lungs and
skin as it doesn’t contain much dust.

The park is suitable for both: admirers of
active and calm recreation. There are children
playgrounds for all age groups, road for roller
skating and pedestrian roads, cafés, parking lot
and toilets in the park. The park is opened all
year round. In winter park is an excellent place
for distant skiing on a lighted trail. The access is
very convenient; there is a parking place for 200
cars at the park. In 2010 a panoramic tower was
opened here. The tower is 33,5 m high and it
reveals an un forgettable view of Jurmala. The
tower has 12 balconies on different levels so
everyone can choose the hight. Visiting tower is
free of charge.

Schoolchildren can spend a nice time with a benefit
for one’s health in Jurmala summer camps.
The camps usually are based in Jurmala school
buildings and offer thematical programmes with
accomodation, full board, swimmimg, sport
games on the beach, hiking and excursions. The
working language is Latvian and/or Russian, the
average lengh – 1 or 2 weeks. Information on

Water amusement park “Līvu Akvaparks” is
the biggest multifunctional water park in
Northern Europe and operates all year round.
The total area of the park is 17 000 sq.m.,
including 6000 sq.m. of summer open-air
area. Aquapark is a good relaxation place for
people of diff erent ages and is divided in 3
functional areas: active, family and SPA.
There are more than 40 kinds of attractions
here: big waves’ pool, aroma bathes and
saunas, bubble bathes, 20 moderate and
extreme water run pipes with boats and
without them, 3rd biggest in the world, and
the only in Europe attraction called “Tornado”,
9 pools (also in winter – open air pool
with warm and cold water), children pirate
ship with water guns and waterfall, half a
kilometer long fl owing river, bistro and a
bar in the water. The water pipes are 1 to 22
meters high, and are 2 to 212 meters long.
“Līvu Akvaparks” is especially friendly for

is from 30 cm to 1.40 meters. Diving pool is
3.60 meters deep.
During summer additional options are

In the shores of Lielupe river there are several
yacht-clubs where you can order the boat
or yacht trips in the river, give yourself in the

football and volleyball take place on Jurmala
beach. There are also open contests where every
team can participate. Football goals are located on
beaches of Dubulti and Kauguri. Beach volleyball
happens on beaches of Bulduri, Melluzi, Assari and
Kauguri (just take a net and a ball with you!).

centre is the biggest tennis centre in Latvia. There

MAJoRi (Jomas iela 32)
Once it was the beginning of Jomas street. In
1877 there was a first pharmacy that burnt down
in the great fire in 1913. In 1953 a sculpture by
L.Kristovskis “Lāčplēsis” was put up in square.
The square and the sculpture were renovated in
2003, but in 2006 a fountain “The Horizon” was
opened here.
2 hoTeL “MAJoRi” (Jomas iela 29)
Built in 1925 in traditional style of historism,
architect – A.Medlinger. Initially there were 100
rooms in the building, but around it – a park with
the fountains. Due to crisis in 1932 the hotel was
auctioned. The splendid furniture and pieces of
art were taken to the castle of Sigulda. Now the
hotel is closed.

art nouveau building with traits of national
romanticism. In 1962 – 1990 Dubulti Lutheran
church was nationalized and Jurmala History
and art museum was operating in the building.
Since 1990 the church has been returned to the
Lutheran congregation.

Built in 1896. In lateral building extension living
premises are arranged. It was managed to save art
monuments in the interior.
6 FoRMeR ResoRT hoTeL
MARienBāDe
(z. Meierovica prospekts 41/43)
The first resort hotel in Jurmala, built in 1870. The
resort became popular thanks to the doctor J.C.
Nordstrom, who started to use the climate therapy.
The patients had to do long walk on bare feet
along the sea, as well as swim in the sea. During
the World War II, almost whole principal building
of the health resort was demolished, but later it
was rebuilt. Today only the tower gallery annexes
and the entrance gate has remained its original
appearance.
7 DweLLinG house (Jūras iela 2)
Built around 1909 and is the richest in details
and most monumental in its constructions
wooden house of neoclassicism in Jurmala. Its’
historical façade and interior was renovated
in 1997. The main facade is decorated with
medallion with a woman’s portrait low relief.
Artist E.Krūmiņš renovated the lost medallion
using the portrait of the new owner of the
house.
Jomas street – one of the central and oldest streets of Jurmala with
restaurants, summer terraces, hotels and cafés with live music.
The name of the street in Latvian means parallel lines in the sand dunes.
Nowadays there is a tradition to celebrate the first pedestrian street’s in
Jurmala - Jomas street’s - festival.
8 JŪRAs sTReeT
Jūras street is closest parallel street to the sea that is
bordering with dunes. Even in the middle of 19th
century the area where streets Jūras and Jomas
now are was covered with wet forest. In the second
part of the 19th century it was allowed to build
dwelling and boarding houses here, and rich people
started to build houses on large sites. Almost all
architectural styles of Jurmala can be observed here,
many of buildings are architectural monuments.
9 DweLLinG house (Jūras iela 6)
Built in 1913 this house is a typical art nouveau
building with very expressive asymmetric composition
of dimensions, and with graceful gazebo that
counterbalances the dimensions of the house. In
window openings and roof’s top decorations rich
woodcarving decorations are used, but in verandas’
windows – arched glass, all those things are very
characteristic of Jurmala’s wooden architecture.
10 BenJAMins’ house (Jūras iela 13)
Built in 1939, architect – L.Vitlin. During the
first period of Latvia’s independence, the famous
publisher and social worker E.Benjamina had a
summer cottage here, and it is one of the most
impressive buildings in Jurmala. The elegance
of the house is stressed by the natural stone
panelling with its evidence of World War II: darker
coloured areas that were a demand for air defence
requirements. The interior of the house is also
kept, as almost 50 years after the war the House

on Benjamins served as summer residency for
authorities of the Soviet Union. Today many pieces
of articstic property of the end of 19th century
and beginning of 20th century still can be found
there. A fence that surrounds the house is the most
magnificent in Jurmala.
11 scuLPTuRe BRuņuRuPucis (the Turtle)
Sculptor - J.Bārda. One of the most popular tourism
objects by which the photos are taken. The turtle
symbolizes long life.
12 seA PAviLion (Tirgoņu iela 1)
Architect - A.Medlinger. Built in 1909 in the style
of historism to be used for leisure activities and
recreation. One of the most prominent social centres
for spendind leisure time of the 20th century
that is located in the dune area. Pavilion offered
restaurant and popular whirling dance floor. One of
the most famous visitors of the pavilion is the King
of Sweden Gustav V, who was there in summer of
1929. The building was renovated in 2005.
13 FoRMeR BATh-house oF e. Rācene
(Pilsoņu iela 1)
Built during years 1911 to 1916. All year round it
offered different baths: heated sea water, carbonic
acid, oxygenous and balsam of fir baths.
In the Soviet times, it served as the resort’s spa
centre – one of the best medical institutions with
the best facilities in former Jurmala. In 2003 the
house was renovated and regained its former look.

15 hoRn’s GARDen (Jomas iela 35)
In 1870 Mr Horn built the first hotel in Majori, and
a concert garden where the famous symphonic
orchestras performed. In 1896 the first movie in
Jurmala was shown here. Despite the fact that
in 1913 the Horn’s Garden together with all the
ambient buildings burnt down in fire, now Jurmala
cultural centre is located there and the music again
is played in the garden. The Horn’s garden was
renovated in 2005.
16 ResTAuRAnT “oRienTs - suLTAns”
(Jomas iela 33)
In the beginning of 20 century there was a summer
residence which burnt down. Later on a small
shop was constructed there, that in 1930 was rearranged
as a warehouse of beer factory “Iļģuciems”.
In 1950 it was a grocery shop, later a pub . In 1996
the building was reconstructed for the restaurant.

In 1870 the first hotel in Majori was built here by
Mr.Horn. In 1896 in the hotel the first cinema at
Riga seaside was arranged. In 1930 the building
was known as the cafe “Mascotte”. Later the cafe
was re-named “Korso”. After World War II here was
restaurant “Seven sisters”, where a famous Latvian
composer Raimonds Pauls played in his youth.
18 wAKeR’s house (JoMAs ieLA 46)
Since 1870 there was a farm of baker Shtegger; the
place was used also as a market place, and a shop
of Korovin was located here - he was the first one
to get a trading licence, this was also a reason why
street got its name – Traders’ street (Tirgoņu iela).
Until the fire of 1913 there were summer
cotages, sheds and cellars belonging to L.Waker.
Several stores and a bakery were here. In 1914
a 3-storeyed stone house with a store, hotel,
restaurant and a city bank was built there. In
1952 on the first floor a fish store was opened
– the walls were decorated with paintings of
O.Stankevich paintings. In 1999 the interior was
covered.

20 DweLLinG house – post office
(Lienes iela 7)
It is an architectural monument of local importance
built in 1897 according to project of V.Eple. It is one
of those few stone houses in Jurmala that have
assymetric dimensions and tower constructions.
During first independence of Latvia there was a post
office that operated till 1980ies. In 2004 renovations
works were finished and the house was nominated
for the best architecture samples in Latvia. Now it is
an apartment and office building.

The central building of the hotel was built in the
beginning of the 20th century as a boarding
house with rich woodcarving decorations of
windows, planks, cornices, silhouette carvings of
planks in the panels of verandas. In this area there
is another historical building where a boarding
house “Imperial” was located during the first
independence of Latvia, but after the World War II
a board of Soviet Union resorts was located here.
After denationalization houses were sold. Since
2004 a hotel “Eiropa” is operating in here.

the late art nouveau style as a lodging-house.
In the Soviet times, it was a health resort.

different age categories, rollerskating tracks
and pedestrian roads, skatepark, streetball
field, cafés, parking places and WC. It is open
all year round.

The first station house was built in 1877
together with the opening of railway traffic in
Jurmala. There was a time when a railway line
Moscow – Ķemeri was operating. Up to 1920
a tram was running from Ķemeri station to
Jaunķemeri beach.
2 ĶeMeRi LuTheRAn chuRch (A.upīša
iela 18)
Built in 1897. Architect - H.Shel. Built in traditions
of historism architecture. There is an altar
piece “Christ healing the sick” (1943 - I.Zeberiņš)
and a memorial plank for Ķemeri inhabitants
fallen during the fight for freedom placed in the
church.
3 sT. PeTeR-PAuL oRThoDox chuRch.

It is the oldest Ķemeri church that according to

4 Love isLeT
On the artificially developed “Love islet” a pavilion
rich in woodcarving decorations was located
in the19th century. It was possible to reach the
upper platform using stairs.
5 MeMoRiAL TRee
Memorial to the founders and directors of
Ķemeri resort, names of which are engraved in
white tablets of the stylized tree.
6 ĶeMeRi ResoRT heALTh cenTRe
Under the project of E.Štālbergs a boiler house
and a medical institution block was built
in 1924. Sulphur water, carbon dioxide and
mud bathes section was opened. The sulphur
spring in the yard of institution was used for
bathing.
7 wATeR ToweR
42 metres high construction (the highest in
Ķemeri) was built in 1929. Architect - F.Skujiņš.
At the top of the tower a sightseeing platform is
Ķemeri Park. The development of park started in 1838. Walks in the park were
considered to be a precondition for recovery of the sick. There are several bridges
made over the Vēršupīte river – Nopūtu, Kaprīžu, Muzikālais and other bridges. It
was also possible to sail small boats on river and canals.

8 FoRMeR hoTeL ĶeMeRi
Built in 1936. Architect - E.Laube. “The white
ship”, as the hotel was called, was one of the
most popular buildings constructed during
the first period of Latvia’s independence. It is a
worth seeing object as there are no other such
buildings in Latvia.
9 PAviLion AnD suLPhuR sPRinG
“LizARD”
There is no place in Western Europe where
sulphur water can be found in such amounts as
in Ķemeri. This is one of the 20 sulphur springs
found in Ķemeri. It is considered to be healthy to
wash face with the water from this spring.
10 MineRAL sPRinG „FoLK DAnce”
The sculpture „Folk Dance” is situated on the
side of Tūristu iela street. Chloride-natrium
water is permanently running here from 51
meter deep well.. This water can be used only
according to the medical prescription (the level
of mineral stuff is 5,6 gr/l). The mineral water
corresponds to the group of medical waters and
is reccomended for treating digestive disorders
according to the prescription.
11 “MežA MāJA” – FoResT house
(from Tūristu iela, T. +371 67730078)
House was built in 1933 according to national
building traditions and is one of the brightest
samples of national romanticism in Latvija
(architect - F.Skujiņš). A prestige restaurant “Jolly
gnat” (“Jautrais ods”) with wide open air terrace
and beautiful mantelhall with wood decorations.
Many famous people and guests of Ķemeri
resort came to relax here. After World War II a
sanatorium for children “Forest house” (Meža
māja) was opened and children from all Soviet
Union came for treatment here. In 1997 after
establishing Ķemeri National park, “Forest house”
became a central house of park administration.
In 2006 the house was reconstructed.

Ķemeri National Park was established in 1997 to protect nature and historical
objects, as well as mineral water springs and healing mud.

Rare and endangered plant species and rare
European birds such as White-tailed eagle,
eagle-owls, black storks and cranes, as
well as different rare animals can be found
in Ķemeri National Park. Wild horses and
cows can be watched in Dunduru meadows.
Several eco-trails are developed in the park.

Varied walking trail with 5 different sport
elements equipped with informative stands
telling about Sloka Lake’s surrounding and
its natural and historical values. Sulphur
springs places available for visitors. Length
of the route is 3.1 km but you can vary it
according to your wishes. The beginning and
the end of the trail is at the bank of Sloka
Lake, in place for parking and picnicking.
Here is also placed a 7m high sightseeing
tower where you can see all the lake. This is
a perfect place for bird watching.
2 BLAcK ALDeRs’ weT FoResT
FooTBRiDGe
Black alders’ wet forest belongs to wetland
broad-leaved forests with high level of
groundwater that seasonally floods roots of
the trees. Walking down the 600 m long trail
you can see flood-land black alder forests
and river Vēršupīte. The swamp forest is suitable
place for Latvian woodpecker species.
The forest is especially amazing in spring, when
the ground is covered with a carpet of yellow
marigold flowers and the air is vibrating with
birds’ songs and woodpecker knocking.

Gardening school in Latvia was founded.
The school was opened in Bulduri, on a
territory of the historical centre of Bulduri
manor. In 1911 the first school building was
settled. By the beginning of World War I a
remarkable household was created here –
the garden had 200 species of fruit-trees,
as well as carrots, tomatoes and corn were
cultivated.
Now it is possible to view gracious avenues
of rhododendrons and flower-beds, grown
by students and teachers of the school. A
museum of the school is open for visitors
upon request.

whiTe Dune
On the right bank of river Lielupe, near
river Buļļupe, in the middle of 18th
century a 15 – 17 metres high dune
outcrop formed. White Dune is one of the
most beautiful Jurmala’s protected nature
objects.
