Making an Application Plan
Students should start building a list of countries and universities where they would like to
apply. Initially, this list might be very large. Through good research and realistic planning,
students will have to bring this list down to only a few schools. REMEMBER: EVERY COLLEGE
YOU APPLY TO SHOULD BE A PLACE WHERE YOU WOULD WANT TO GO TO STUDY. Do not
make an application otherwise!
� UWCM students will be assisted with a maximum of 7 college applications world-wide:
� UK: UCAS limits 5 choices (4 for medicine) = 1 application
� USA & Canada: internal limit of 6 applications combined (each application
counts! Repeated contact with unis and extensive paperwork required)
� Netherlands: limit 3 choices on Studielink.nl (only 1 course with central selection)
� Other countries: may have limitations, you find out
� Example: Student A applies to the UK (1), USA (5), Netherlands (1)
� Example: Student B applies to the USA (6) and home country (1)
� Example: Student C applies to the UK (1) and the Netherlands (3)
Maximum 7 Applications World Wide
Why do we limit this number?
� It forces students to choose wisely and make informed decisions
� Applications take up LOTS of time & energy – time management with IBDP
demands
� Applications in the UK are sent once and use the same essay but applications in
the USA require REPEATED contact between the student, UWCM and the
university admissions office.
� International students are competing against other UWC students for places and
scholarships. Don’t want to hold too many offers and prevent someone else
from getting in.
� All UWCs place a limit on the number of applications they can support
