• All functions of the APN Secretariat were transferred to IGES in April 2004. Some
innovative results were produced including the establishment of an independent
account for the APN;
• There is growing awareness of the APN at the global level and within global
change activities such as the GEOSS; and
• Cooperation and contribution throughout the meeting and beyond to implement
the second strategic phase.
1. Election of Officers
Mr. Yamamura proposed that Mr. Kazuhiko Takemoto, the APN national Focal Point
for Japan and Mr. Sovannnang Ieng, the APN national Focal Point for Cambodia be
elected as Chair and Vice Chair, respectively. The delegates accepted the proposal.
Mr. Kazuhiko Takemoto thanked the delegates for their election.
2. Adoption of the Agenda
Mr. Takemoto introduced the agenda noting that flexibility was welcomed. The
agenda was adopted as proposed.
3. Review of 2004/2005 Activities
Mr. Martin Rice, Programme Manager for Communications and Development gave a
brief overview of the history of the APN and its place within the international Global
Change community. He then presented a review of APN’s activities since the 9th
IGM/SPG Meetings in Canberra, Australia. Highlights are as follows:
Outstanding activities:
• Completed the evaluation of APN’s activities (1996-2004);
• Prepared the Evaluation Report and the Second Strategic Plan;
• Started the APN Programme Fellowship Initiative (Capacity Building); and
• Published the APN Global Change Coastal Zone Management Synthesis
Report (ISBN4-990-25000-1 C3244).
Publicity and Communications:
• Distributed the first APN annual report (2003/2004);
• Issued quarterly newsletters electronically;
• Featured APN activities in national and local newspapers, radio and television;
• Disseminated APN information at national and international fora;
• Published a CAPaBLE brochure and poster;
• Published the APN Project and Regional Reports 2004/2005;
• Produced custom made posters;

3. Climate calamities and human health
• Produced APN/WHO Proceedings for public forum on climate calamities and
human health (World Conference on Disaster Reduction);

2004/2005; and
• APN/Hyogo joint Public Forum on Global Change Research and Environmental
Education.
