ADMINISTRATORS TAKE ON new roles<br />

Dean Rex Adams announced a number<br />

<strong>of</strong> new appointments for members<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Fuqua</strong>’s senior leadership and<br />

administrative teams since the last<br />

Exchange.<br />

John W. Payne, the Joseph J.<br />

Ruvane Jr. pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> management,<br />

was promoted to deputy dean from his<br />

post as senior associate dean for faculty<br />

and research. This newly created<br />

position <strong>of</strong>fers Payne the opportunity<br />

to oversee all <strong>of</strong> <strong>Fuqua</strong>’s academic programs.<br />

Adams announced several other<br />

leadership appointments. Daniel R.<br />

Nagy moved to the position <strong>of</strong> associate<br />

dean for MBA program operations.<br />

In his new role, he will oversee the<br />

admissions, operations and corporate<br />

relationship-building for the school’s<br />

four MBA programs. Sheryle Dirks<br />

moved into the position <strong>of</strong> director <strong>of</strong><br />

Career Services previously held by<br />

Nagy. She is well regarded by the students<br />

as evidenced by her recognition<br />

as the Student’s Choice Staff Award<br />

recipient at Celebrate <strong>Fuqua</strong> 2000.<br />

Associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor Alison Ashton<br />

was appointed to the post <strong>of</strong> associate<br />

dean for executive MBA programs.<br />

She will have academic responsibility<br />

for The <strong>Duke</strong> MBA – Global Executive,<br />

Cross Continent and Weekend<br />

Executive programs. Ashton replaces<br />

Marian Moore, who went on sabbatical<br />

last summer. In addition, James E.<br />

Smith, associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> decision<br />

sciences, was appointed to associate<br />

dean for The <strong>Duke</strong> MBA (daytime)<br />

program. He replaces Joel Huber,<br />

who went on sabbatical last summer.<br />

Richard Staelin, the Edward S. and<br />

Rose Donnell pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> marketing,<br />

was appointed associate dean for executive<br />

education. In this new role, he<br />

will concentrate on leading <strong>Fuqua</strong>’s<br />

open-enrollment executive education<br />

programs and expanding it to include<br />

course <strong>of</strong>ferings in Europe in the coming<br />

year. He replaces Wanda Wallace,<br />

who joined <strong>Duke</strong> Corporate<br />

Education, Inc. as director <strong>of</strong> customer<br />

and program relations.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor John Forsyth has been<br />

named the director <strong>of</strong> the John W.<br />

Hartman Center for the management<br />

<strong>of</strong> Medium Size Enterprises. He<br />

replaces executive-in-residence Bob<br />

Price, who held the post for the past<br />

two years. Price will continue to serve<br />

on the executive advisory committee.<br />

Marilyn Morgan was appointed<br />

to assistant dean and director <strong>of</strong> The<br />

<strong>Duke</strong> MBA – Global Executive program.<br />

Prior to coming to <strong>Fuqua</strong>, she<br />

was an assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> manage-<br />

Checking Out THE COMPETITION<br />

The <strong>Duke</strong> Start-Up Challenge is looking<br />

for a few good judges. A <strong>Duke</strong><br />

University business plan competition,<br />

students divide up into teams and submit<br />

business plans to compete for the<br />

$100,000 in prize money.<br />

<strong>Fuqua</strong> looks to alumni to serve as<br />

judges for the event. The candidate’s<br />

background can vary from experience in<br />

venture capital, private equity, investment<br />

banking, consulting or start-up<br />

expertise. The judging format takes<br />

place in two phases. Phase 1 requires<br />

each judge to review five executive<br />

summaries and phase two requires critiquing<br />

two business plans. A time<br />

commitment <strong>of</strong> approximately eight<br />

hours is needed to complete both<br />

phases. Each judge has the option <strong>of</strong><br />

participating in just one or both <strong>of</strong> the<br />

phases.<br />

A special thanks goes to Garry<br />

Snook ’81 for providing funding for<br />

the first prize <strong>of</strong> $50,000. He contributed<br />

even more by serving as a<br />

third-round judge for the event.<br />

Alumni can also become involved<br />

by serving as a mentor to a particular<br />

ment at the University <strong>of</strong><br />

Pennsylvania’s Wharton <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Business</strong> and at the University <strong>of</strong><br />

Virginia.<br />

In addition to the senior leadership<br />

appointments, Dean Adams<br />

announced staff appointments and<br />

additions in the Office <strong>of</strong> Development<br />

and Alumni Relations department.<br />

Director <strong>of</strong> alumni relations, Cathy<br />

Gilliard was promoted to director <strong>of</strong><br />

alumni global outreach. In her new role<br />

she will focus on the expansion <strong>of</strong> the<br />

MBA programmatic <strong>of</strong>ferings and the<br />

need to better serve constituents<br />

around the globe.<br />

Ashlyn Sowell, director <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Annual Fund, was promoted to associate<br />

director <strong>of</strong> development and director<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Isle Maligne Society. Her new<br />

responsibilities include working to<br />

develop <strong>Fuqua</strong>’s base <strong>of</strong> high-level<br />

annual fund contributors. She will continue<br />

to provide leadership and guidance<br />

for all Annual Fund programs.<br />

Newcomer Josh Bond joined<br />

Development and Alumni Relations as<br />

the director <strong>of</strong> major gifts. He comes to<br />

<strong>Fuqua</strong> from the Darden <strong>School</strong> at the<br />

University <strong>of</strong> Virginia.<br />

Start-Up Challenge’s primary goal is to<br />

position <strong>Duke</strong> University as the preeminent<br />

center <strong>of</strong> entrepreneurship education<br />

in the Southeast.<br />
