UPDATE: Campaign for Duke
As we go to press on this issue of
Exchange, there is important news
regarding the Campaign for Duke. Duke
University President, Nannerl
Keohane, and Campaign for Duke
Co-chairs, Peter Nicholas T’64 and
Ginny Nicholas W’64, announced an
increase in the university goal from
$1.5 billion to $2 billion.
The decision to increase the goal
was made after careful consideration
of a new strategic plan that will have a
far-reaching influence on Duke. As
one of the world’s finest universities,
we are prepared to make the necessary
investments in key areas to ensure
that we realize Mr. Duke’s dream, that
the university should attain and maintain
“a place of real leadership in the
educational world.”
The Fuqua School of Business, as
part of the strategic planning process,
has decided to increase The Campaign
for Fuqua goal from $60 million to
$80 million. Members of the Board of
Visitors and the Campaign leadership
believe that this action is appropriate
given the unmet needs of the school in
the face of fierce competition among
our small group of Top 5 peers.
The next issue of Exchange will
provide detailed information on the
Campaign.
A significant milestone in campaign
endeavors happened in January
2001 when The Fuqua School of
Business broke ground for the new
student center. This was made possible
in part through a most generous gift
from the Lafe P. Fox Family
Foundation, as well as commitments
from Lafe and Rita’s children, Rick
Fox and Carol DeJoy. In recognition
of this very significant gift, the Duke
University Board of Trustees approved
the new facility to be named the Lafe
P. and Rita D. Fox Student Center.
Rick and Carol were presented with a
Steuben eagle and framed copies of
the Board of Trustees resolution to
name the facility in memory of their
parents at the November 3 Board of
Visitors Awards program.
A number of Isle Maligne Society
members at the Centurion level were
recognized and presented with the
bronze eagle at the recent Board of
Visitors meeting as well. The Isle
Maligne Society is Fuqua’s leadership
gift club. The bronze eagle is presented
to donors at the Centurion level who
contribute at least $100,000 in gifts
or pledges. Aubrey and Kathleen
McClendon (T’81, T’80) were recognized
for their generous commitment
to name the dining area in the new
student center. Mr. McClendon, chairman
and CEO of Chesapeake Energy
Corporation in Oklahoma City, has
been a member of Fuqua’s Board of
Visitors since 1996. Gerald Hassell
T’73, president of The Bank of New
York and Board of Visitors member,
became a Centurion member of the
Isle Maligne society with a commitment
to Fuqua’s Annual Fund. Other
members who were recognized for the
establishment of scholarships are mentioned
below.
Fuqua has successfully completed
The Duke Endowment Challenge for
scholarship support. Early in the
Campaign for Fuqua, The Duke
Endowment provided a $750,000 challenge
gift to be used in order to
increase endowed scholarship support.
In the past three years we have successfully
secured $2.4 million in new
scholarship endowments.
Since our last Exchange campaign
update, the following alumni and
friends have established new scholarships
or made additional gifts to existing
endowments to take full advantage
of the match: Eugene and Phyllis
Magat and other donors for The Wesley
A. Magat Memorial Scholarship; D.
Richard Mead Jr. T’52 for The Mead
Scholarship; Jeffrey Rollins ’88 for
The Opportunity Fund; John W. Rollins
for The Rollins Scholars; Peter
Sacerdote for The Sacerdote Family
Scholarship; Mark Winmill ’87 for The
Thanksgiving Foundation Scholarship;
and Textron for The Textron
Scholarship.
