This issue of Exchange features
four milestones we can be
proud of and which will help
us sustain our reputation as
one of the top five business schools
worldwide. This mission of sustainability,
which was set before Fuqua in our
recently completed strategic plan for
2000-2005, is well within our reach.
Being ranked No. 5 in the United
States by Business Week was the first
among these milestones. We try to keep
such rankings in their proper perspective,
not letting them drive the strategies or
actions that we take. But honestly, it felt
terrific for all of us to see our accomplishments
reported in the magazine as taking
“the B-school world by storm.”
Second, I expect that many readers
will consider the launching of the Cross
Continent program and the opening of
the Fuqua School of Business Europe as
an ambitious dream come true. We were
bold enough to announce in October
1999 that we would open a Frankfurt
campus and begin The Duke MBA – Cross
Continent, not yet having a campus, students,
faculty or even a curriculum.
Thanks to the dedication and hard
work of countless faculty and staff, we
celebrated the actual start of Cross
Continent in August of this year.
A third milestone was the creation
of the for-profit Duke Corporate
Education, Inc., which will house our
customized executive education and
e-learning consulting operations. Blair
Sheppard and his fast-growing cadre of
experts are off to an excellent start in
fulfilling the huge potential of corporate
education.
The fourth milestone is the dedication
of the Wesley A. Magat Academic
Center. This center was dedicated in
April 2000 and has been an important
addition to the Fuqua campus, allowing
us to expand our faculty in support of
our growth plans.
Other important news includes how
our Fuqua brand is evolving into a more
powerful marketing tool for the school,
the new courses offered by our openenrollment
executive education operation,
Fuqua’s new faculty, the start of
construction of our new student center
and a campaign update. We invite your
continued partnership as we sustain
this exciting momentum into the new
millennium.
