Patricia Thornton
Associate Professor, Practice of Business Administration
Prior to coming to Fuqua, Patricia Thornton was an assistant
professor in the sociology department at Duke
University, where she developed the core entrepreneurship
course and the venture capital capstone seminar for the
undergraduate market and management studies program.
Her courses and guest speaker series caught the eye of
a group of Fuqua students who were leaders of the Duke
University Network of Entrepreneurs (DUNE), a universitywide
organization comprised of both graduate and undergraduate
students.
Feeling her expertise
could fulfill a need,
these students
approached her to be
a faculty adviser.
Through a series of
opportunities coupled
with her collaborative
relationships with the
management area
research faculty,
Thornton joined the
Fuqua faculty as an
associate professor in
September.
At Fuqua, she is
developing a course on evaluating entrepreneurial opportunities
and environments for The Duke MBA (daytime)
program. Her main objective is to give conceptual tools and
experience with practitioners to her students to enable
them to evaluate entrepreneurial opportunities, and to
understand the environments in which such opportunities
are likely to arise.
Her research and teaching interests are in organization
theory, entrepreneurship and strategy, with a focus on constructing
and testing theories that provide a better understanding
of the impact of institutional change on organization
decisions.
Thornton earned her Ph.D. in sociology from Stanford
University in 1993. She recently received the W. Richard
Scott award for her American Journal of Sociology article on
how change in industry culture affects the sources of
power that determine executive succession in organizations.
She also has written the often-cited article, “The
Sociology of Entrepreneurship,” featured in the Annual
Review of Sociology.
