STUDENT CENTER
Construction crews started breaking ground in January to commence the building of the Lafe D.
and Rita D. Fox Student Center [see page 6]. When the student center is completed, the building will be
nestled between and will connect the east and west wings of the Thomas F. Keller Center. By virtue
of its location and function, the student center will become the hub of campus life at Fuqua.
By Kerry Finnegan
The “quieter” phase of construction will continue through
the spring with the noisiest and most disruptive construction
beginning after The Duke MBA (daytime) graduation in
May 2001. This event initiates phase three in the four-phase
facilities plan for constructing and renovating Fuqua’s MBA
complex.
The completion of the Wesley Alexander Magat Academic
Center and the renovated 40,000 square feet of space in the
Thomas F. Keller Center marked two phases of the four-phase
facilities plan for Fuqua’s MBA complex. The space vacated by
faculty in the Keller Center now houses all of the administrative
departments servicing The Duke MBA (daytime) program
(Admissions, Career & Student Services) and provides 22
interview rooms which double as student team rooms in the
evenings and on weekends. After completion of the student
center, more renovations to existing space in the Keller
Center will provide space for Ph.D.s and computer and
behavioral labs.
As for architectural features, the student center plan
includes the construction of a 36,500 square foot mini tower
to fulfill administrative needs and accommodate 14 additional
faculty offices. The 48,100 square foot student center proper
will greatly improve student life as well. With the addition of
a spacious indoor winter garden area, outdoor terraces,
changing rooms with lockers and showers, a student communications
center, additional office space, food kiosks and many
different types of lounges and dining areas, these amenities
and conveniences will further serve the needs of the students.
Dean Adams summarizes this development plan by saying,
“Our goal is to develop a space that is inviting and com-
Feature
fortable, but efficient enough to handle the peak load of daytime
students, faculty and staff for lunch.” In compliance with
student and faculty feedback in response to a food survey distributed
last winter, the student center will house three food
services areas: a “grab & go” area, a café and a restaurant. The
R. David Thomas Center staff will run the food service operations.
Food in the “grab & go” category consists of quick items
such as bottled juices and sodas, hot and cold sandwiches,
entrée specials, salads and desserts. The café will serve madeto-order
deli sandwiches, salads, and soup and will feature an
espresso bar. The restaurant will serve a variety of food items
ranging from pizza, hotdogs and hamburgers to pasta, stir-fry
and entrée specials.
Students will find the new student center a welcome
change when driving to campus in the morning. They can
enjoy the convenience of grabbing a hot meal, preparing for
an interview, studying in the lounge or even taking a shower
after an afternoon jog, all under one roof.
