Faculty N ews TAKING diversity TO A NEW LEVEL Fuqua executive-in-residence, William A. Sax was awarded Duke University’s first annual Diversity Award at the Night of Duke’s Stars event on August 17. This award acknowledges extraordinary people whose respect and value for people’s varying backgrounds and viewpoints have changed and enhanced the university’s sense of tolerance. Duke University President Nannerl Keohane personally presented him with a trophy and a financial stipend in recognition of his continuous service to the minority community for over ten years. Nine years ago, Sax founded the Minority Business Consulting Program (MBCP) that offers assistance to minority-owned businesses. Each business must meet a list of criteria before their application is considered. The types of businesses fall into various categories spanning from high work to high tech to mom and pop stores and virtual enterprises. A successful endeavor, Sax received a formal commendation from the North Carolina Institute for Minority Economic Development for his hard work and dedication. 22I F u q u a / W i n t e r 2 0 0 1 Outside Fuqua, Sax has been on the board of Durham Companions (DC) for six years, and two of those years served as its president. This mentoring program gives troubled minority children the needed guidance and direction to lead productive lives. Along these same lines, he also put together an entrepreneurship course for medium-security inmates at the Butner Federal Penitentiary. At Fuqua, Sax serves as a guest lecturer for the LEAD and Ford diversity recruiting programs. In addition, he also directs Fuqua students in the Success Through Entrepreneurial Program (STEP), which he and fellow Fuqua grad, John Zigler faculty HONORS, AWARDS AND PROMOTIONS Richard Staelin, the Edward and Rose Donnell Professor of Business Administration and Marketing, was awarded the prestigious Paul D. Converse Award given by the American Marketing Association. This award recognizes persons who have made outstanding contributions to the theory or science of marketing. In order to qualify for the selection process, each individual contribution will only be considered after it has been published for at least five years. The awards are selected by a national jury of scholars once every five to ten years. Staelin’s winning article, along with Tim McGuire, on distribution systems titled, “An Industry Equilibrium Analysis of Downstream Vertical Integration,” was published in Marketing Science in 1983. Thomas A. Finch Professor of Business Administration in Management, E. Allan Lind, was awarded the Harry J. Kalven, Jr. Prize for his work on “paradigm shifting scholarship in the study of law and society.” He shared this award with Northwestern colleague Tom Tyler. This prize is granted every two years and is the top award of the Law and Society Association. James R. Bettman, the Burlington Industries Professor and director of the Ph.D. program and John W. Payne, the Joseph J. Ruvane, Jr. Professor and deputy dean at Fuqua, were selected by editors of the Journal in Business at the University of Chicago to receive the Leo Melamed Prize for outstanding scholar- ’91, founded nine years ago as well. Each year approximately 30 to 35 high school students are paired with 15 to 20 Fuqua volunteers. The MBA students teach primarily minority students about entrepreneurship. This exciting and successful program has prompted a number of high school students to go to college. Prior to entering academia, Sax worked at Unocal Corporation for 31 years where he served as vice president of International Oil and Gas Exploration. At Fuqua, he teaches classes in Strategic Planning for Mid-sized Companies and Consulting for Small Business and has worked with approximately 200 companies throughout North Carolina incorporating his course concepts. A graduate of St. Louis University with a major in geophysics, Sax has written several papers and lectured on topics focusing on leadership, management, strategic planning, marketing, accounting procedures, and financial planning. ship by business school professors. Both professors, along with former Fuqua Ph.D. student Mary Frances Luce, received this prize in recognition of their paper, “Constructive Consumer Processes,” which appeared in the 1988 Journal of Consumer Research. This prize is awarded every two years and carries with it a citation, a medal and an honorarium. In addition, Bettman was recognized by the American Marketing Association and received the AMA/Irwin Distinguished Educator Award for his outstanding contributions to the field of marketing. This award is given annually to the educator who is an innovative teacher and researcher and who best serves the marketing

John Graham, associate professor of finance at Fuqua, was awarded one of only eight Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowships for his paper on, “Debt and the Marginal Tax Rate,” which tackles the incredibly difficult problem corporations face: how much debt should they assume? The fellowships are designed to identify those persons who show the most outstanding promise of making fundamental contributions to new knowledge. James E. Smith, associate professor and associate dean for The Duke MBA program, received the 2000 Publication Award from the Decision Sciences Society for his paper, “Evaluating Income Streams: A Decision Analysis Approach.” His article was published in Management Science in 1998. This award brings his total to three, and with this new accomplishment, has Alumni Reunion Weekend 2 0 0 1 deemed him the first ever three-time DAS Publication Award winner. Associate professor Jennifer Francis (pictured above) received the DaimlerChrysler Award for Innovation and Excellence in Teaching from first-year students for her teaching in a core course. She teaches managerial accounting and a new elective course called Valuation and Fundamental Analysis. April 27-29, 2001 At the Board of Visitors meeting in November, James F. Rabenhorst was recognized for his retirement from the Board of Visitors and was presented with an award for his dedicated service and many contributions to Fuqua. He has served on the BOV since 1984. Rabenhorst has recently made the transition over to the faculty side as an executive-in-residence. Assistant professor Michel Regenwetter won the 1999 New Investigator Award from the Society for Mathematical Psychology. The award is given to one junior mathematical psychologist worldwide for outstanding research achievement. Regenwetter is an expert in decision sciences and random utility theory. Robert Clemen, associate professor of decision sciences, was granted tenure and Carolyn Levine, assistant professor of accounting, was elevated to associate professor. Save the Date!
