TYPE OF PROJECT<br />
Ghana’s media landscape has witnessed a proliferati<strong>on</strong> of media houses <strong>in</strong> the past twenty years, with the<br />
country now boast<strong>in</strong>g over 130 FM radio stati<strong>on</strong>s, 16 TV channels and over 300 newspapers. Unfortunately<br />
however, many of these media houses are dom<strong>in</strong>ated by commercialism and political agendas, and tend to lack<br />
plurality <strong>in</strong> terms of c<strong>on</strong>tent and orientati<strong>on</strong>. Community radios by c<strong>on</strong>trast, are not driven by profit and<br />
propaganda, and therefore have the potential to change lives through better and <strong>in</strong>creased access to <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong><br />
of social significance.<br />
This project aims to provide the necessary equipment to upgrade the producti<strong>on</strong> capacity of the community<br />
radio stati<strong>on</strong>, ‘Radio Builsa’, and to provide tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g over a 5-day period to a group of 60 radio stati<strong>on</strong><br />
volunteers and managers. It will result <strong>in</strong> the producti<strong>on</strong> and broadcast<strong>in</strong>g of two new programmes promot<strong>in</strong>g<br />
community participati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> public discourse, as well as two programmes to create a platform for engagement<br />
between community members and elected representatives, thus lead<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>in</strong>creased accountability and<br />
community <strong>in</strong>volvement am<strong>on</strong>g leaders. In achiev<strong>in</strong>g its goal, this project will help to empower the people of<br />
the Builsa District (who presently suffer from low literacy and limited access to <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong>), by provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />
them with the means to make <strong>in</strong>formed decisi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> the choice of leaders and participate <strong>in</strong> democratic debate.<br />
Overall goal<br />
To provide the necessary equipment to upgrade the producti<strong>on</strong> capacity of the community radio stati<strong>on</strong>, ‘Radio<br />
Builsa’, and to provide tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to 60 radio stati<strong>on</strong> volunteers and managers <strong>in</strong> order to produce broadcast<strong>in</strong>g<br />
c<strong>on</strong>tent which promotes community participati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> democratic debate.<br />
IMPLEMENTATION<br />
The objective of the project is to upgrade the producti<strong>on</strong> capacity of Radio Builsa and tra<strong>in</strong> 60 radio stati<strong>on</strong><br />
volunteers and managers. In order to achieve the above objective, Radio Builsa will:<br />
� Procure a c<strong>on</strong>sole, an amplifier, and two (2) equalizers and other modern studio equipment at Radio<br />
Builsa.<br />
� C<strong>on</strong>duct a 5-day tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g workshop for 60 radio stati<strong>on</strong> volunteers and managers <strong>in</strong> order to produce<br />
broadcast<strong>in</strong>g c<strong>on</strong>tent which promotes community participati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> democratic debate.<br />
� Pilot the Producti<strong>on</strong> and broadcast of radio programme series promot<strong>in</strong>g community participati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />
public policy discourse.<br />
� Pilot the Producti<strong>on</strong> and broadcast of radio programme series promot<strong>in</strong>g engagement between<br />
community members and elected representatives.<br />

RESULTS<br />
An <strong>in</strong>itial amount of GH16,786.00($10,900) was received to f<strong>in</strong>ance the procurement a c<strong>on</strong>sole, 4 microph<strong>on</strong>es,<br />
4 headph<strong>on</strong>es, a flat screen computer, a pair of speakers and a UPS.<br />
