TANZANIA: ESTABLISHMENT OF A CMC FOR THE MAASAI PASTORAL<br />

COMMUNITIES OF NGORONGORO DISTRICT<br />

TYPE OF PROJECT<br />

The project seeks to support 14 pastoralists’ villages <strong>in</strong> Ngor<strong>on</strong>goro district who have been excluded from the<br />

<strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> flow and avenues for self expressi<strong>on</strong>. Trough this project, a community multimedia centre will be<br />

established <strong>in</strong> efforts to c<strong>on</strong>tribute to <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g diversity and plurality of media <strong>in</strong> Tanzania and enhanc<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

capacities of pastoralist communities to use media as a platform for build<strong>in</strong>g their livelihoods; governmentcommunity<br />

partnerships and dialogue and for democratic discourse. In this way, the community will have the<br />

opportunity to express their democratic values and freedom of speech. The Maasai have co-existed with wildlife<br />

for a l<strong>on</strong>g time and their lands have c<strong>on</strong>tributed highly to the present day nati<strong>on</strong>al parks like Serengeti and<br />

Ngor<strong>on</strong>goro world heritage sites (and biosphere reserve). As another development objective, the CMC will<br />

enhance the participati<strong>on</strong> of the Maasai <strong>in</strong> the c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> and preservati<strong>on</strong> of these sites and <strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> general.<br />

IMPLEMENTATION<br />

� Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for the volunteers who will be operat<strong>in</strong>g the CMC will be undertaken<br />

� Acquir<strong>in</strong>g the equipment to furnish the CMC like radio equipment, computers, power <strong>in</strong>stallati<strong>on</strong> so that the<br />

centre can operate at full capacity<br />

� Installati<strong>on</strong> of the Center equipment and facilities<br />

� Establish<strong>in</strong>g broadcast<strong>in</strong>g partnership with TBC1, BBC, KBC, Radio Tuma<strong>in</strong>i, Adventista. Partnerships <strong>on</strong><br />

programme exchanges will also be established with other Community Radios and other Nati<strong>on</strong>al partners<br />

such as HIV/AIDS, Malaria Social Market<strong>in</strong>g Companies and Nati<strong>on</strong>al Envir<strong>on</strong>mental Management<br />

Commitee.<br />

� Facilitat<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and mobilisati<strong>on</strong> of the community <strong>on</strong> the use services provided by the CMC<br />

� To c<strong>on</strong>duct campaign to raise community awareness <strong>on</strong> how to access, use, and participate <strong>in</strong> the<br />

management of the Centre.<br />

� Establish<strong>in</strong>g work<strong>in</strong>g relati<strong>on</strong>ships with the Community Media Network of Tanzania and Media Council of<br />

Tanzania.<br />

RESULTS<br />

� 300 Watts producti<strong>on</strong> and broadcast<strong>in</strong>g equipment has been purchased and delivered <strong>on</strong> site.<br />

� A brand new premises with space for producti<strong>on</strong> room, broadcast<strong>in</strong>g room, staff room for the Community<br />

Radio, funded by OXFAM has been built.<br />

� A separate small hut located a few hundred metres away from the Community Radio has been secured for<br />

the development of a community multimedia centre.<br />

� In collaborati<strong>on</strong> with UN Women, and with<strong>in</strong> the framework of the voters educati<strong>on</strong> programme for<br />

Tanzania, 200 Solar and crank-w<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g powered FM radio sets have been distributed to 200 families that<br />

do not own radio sets <strong>in</strong> preparati<strong>on</strong> for the open<strong>in</strong>g up of the radio.<br />
