TYPE OF PROJECT<br />

The project aims to help to tackle capacity build<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for the staff of SUDE community radio.<br />

IMPLEMENTATION<br />

PFMA c<strong>on</strong>ducted from October 25 to October 29, 2011, a tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to Sude Community Radio Broadcasters <strong>on</strong><br />

the follow<strong>in</strong>g topics:<br />

� Radio Program Plann<strong>in</strong>g and Interview techniques,<br />

� Digital audio c<strong>on</strong>cepts, Effects <strong>in</strong> Adobe Auditi<strong>on</strong>, Learn<strong>in</strong>g Audio mix<strong>in</strong>g methods: Multi-track,<br />

View, Data Collecti<strong>on</strong> Techniques,<br />

� Advanced writ<strong>in</strong>g skills,<br />

� Radio Show/Talk Programs<br />

� Media Ethics and Law, am<strong>on</strong>g others.<br />

Peace Family and Media Associati<strong>on</strong> through the facilitati<strong>on</strong> of UNESCO and through the support of<br />

Internati<strong>on</strong>al Program for the Development of Communicati<strong>on</strong> (<strong>IPDC</strong>) have organized a five-day l<strong>on</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

workshop under the title “Professi<strong>on</strong>al Capacity Build<strong>in</strong>g Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to Sude Community Radio Broadcasters” for<br />

10 volunteer journalists <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a management member and a technique staff of the stati<strong>on</strong> at Adama Ras<br />

Hotel <strong>in</strong> Adam (Nathret) town from Oct 25 to 29, 2011.<br />

In the open<strong>in</strong>g sessi<strong>on</strong> of the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Dr. Jean Pierre ILBOUDO, Regi<strong>on</strong>al Advisor for Communicati<strong>on</strong> and<br />

Informati<strong>on</strong> with UNESCO delivered an open<strong>in</strong>g remark by giv<strong>in</strong>g emphasis <strong>on</strong> the overall objective of the<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and the role of the tra<strong>in</strong>ee <strong>in</strong> address<strong>in</strong>g thematic issues that are affect<strong>in</strong>g the communities at large. He<br />

also elaborated the vital role of community media <strong>in</strong> the African c<strong>on</strong>text and its values <strong>in</strong> terms of br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g<br />

development for the wider public as well as the empowerment of woman which are unprivileged <strong>in</strong> many ways.<br />

At the first sessi<strong>on</strong> of the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, radio program plann<strong>in</strong>g was discussed. The discussi<strong>on</strong> also <strong>in</strong>cluded a<br />

practical exercise how radio programs and news are planned. Hypothetical problems were used from which a<br />

radio program and news was planned.<br />

Advanced <strong>in</strong>terview techniques were also discussed <strong>in</strong> the sec<strong>on</strong>d sessi<strong>on</strong> of the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. This was also<br />

supported by a practical <strong>in</strong>terview <strong>in</strong> which half of the tra<strong>in</strong>ees acted as journalists and the rest as <strong>in</strong>terviewee<br />

and the reverse. Here data collecti<strong>on</strong> and analysis as well as research were also briefly discussed.<br />

Audio editi<strong>on</strong> is the ma<strong>in</strong> comp<strong>on</strong>ent of the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g tak<strong>in</strong>g the li<strong>on</strong>’s share of the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. This was also a<br />

sessi<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> which tra<strong>in</strong>ers better acqua<strong>in</strong>t themselves with digital edit<strong>in</strong>g (Adobe Editi<strong>on</strong>).<br />

Advanced writ<strong>in</strong>g skills, the other issue addressed dur<strong>in</strong>g the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is believed to further boost their<br />

journalistic skill especially <strong>in</strong> “writ<strong>in</strong>g for the ear”.<br />

On the last sessi<strong>on</strong> of the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, the workshop deliberated <strong>on</strong> media ethics and f<strong>in</strong>ally outl<strong>in</strong>ed a draft Sude<br />

community Radio code of c<strong>on</strong>duct to be endorsed by the Board of the Stati<strong>on</strong><br />

Banner bear<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>signia of UNESCO and PFMA has been posted at the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g hall as well as <strong>in</strong> all<br />

visibility activities.<br />
