LIBERIA: COMPUTER LITERACY AND INTERNET JOURNALISM TRAINING<br />

TYPE OF PROJECT<br />
The project was submitted by Centre for Media Studies and Peace Build<strong>in</strong>g (CEMESP). CEMESP <strong>in</strong>tended to<br />
c<strong>on</strong>duct a 6-m<strong>on</strong>th computer literacy and Internet journalism tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programme for women journalists. For<br />
that purpose, they organised a total of 30 women journalists from various media <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s. The project was<br />
designed to provide the requisite work envir<strong>on</strong>ment and the participants’ stipends. The beneficiaries will largely<br />
be <strong>in</strong>volved with master<strong>in</strong>g radio producti<strong>on</strong> edit<strong>in</strong>g software and the techniques needed for the practice of<br />
Internet journalism. The f<strong>in</strong>al phase of the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g will c<strong>on</strong>centrate <strong>on</strong> Internet journalism, i.e. blogg<strong>in</strong>g. The<br />
project will also establish a m<strong>on</strong>itor<strong>in</strong>g and track<strong>in</strong>g mechanism to determ<strong>in</strong>e the impact of the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong> the<br />
beneficiaries. The six-m<strong>on</strong>th tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g exercise will be climaxed by a certificati<strong>on</strong> programme by CEMESP.<br />
IMPLEMENTATION<br />
UNESCO BREDA signed a c<strong>on</strong>tract with CEMESP for the implementati<strong>on</strong> phase. CEMESP c<strong>on</strong>ducted a 6m<strong>on</strong>th<br />
computer literacy and Internet journalism tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programme for women journalists. The project will<br />
tra<strong>in</strong> a total of 30 women journalists from various media <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />
RESULTS<br />
� 30 Women journalists have acquired the requisite knowledge of basic computer software necessary to<br />
enhance their work as journalists;<br />
� 30 Women journalists have endowed with practical skills needed <strong>in</strong> produc<strong>in</strong>g radio programmes us<strong>in</strong>g<br />
modern digital techniques;<br />
� 30 women journalists have ga<strong>in</strong>ed skills and knowledge <strong>in</strong> establish<strong>in</strong>g blogs;<br />
� 30 women women journalists have ga<strong>in</strong>ed skills <strong>in</strong> Internet journalism;<br />
CONCLUSION<br />
The project has c<strong>on</strong>tributed to the creati<strong>on</strong> of a pool of professi<strong>on</strong>al Liberian women journalists. most Liberian<br />
journalists have little or no exposure to new technologies and trends <strong>in</strong> the media, lead<strong>in</strong>g to poor quality media<br />
products and this project has c<strong>on</strong>tribute to tra<strong>in</strong> 30 women <strong>on</strong> these issues.<br />
