share and govt is passing through
a severe financial crisis. Charging
of user fee is an obvious option.
Even a number of low income
developing countries like Sudan,
Ethiopia, Ghana and Jamaica
implemented user fee in public
hopsitals for the efficient running
of them. Charging fees is never a
bad idea. Reasonable amount may
be charged from those
beneficiaries who could afford to
pay them. Fund thus raised can be
used for the timely repair, supplies
of essential. Moreover, some
amoun t can be set apart for
exte,nding free medical facilities to
the poor without imposing any
burden on the govt. Madavana
main PRC in Trichur district of
Kodungallur block is performing
wellby charging nominal fees from
beneficiaries. The fund thus raised
is spent on repairs maintenance
and buying essentials. They are
performing even cataract surgery.
No govt can afford free medical
service to all in a situation of rising
cost of medicine and morbidity.
The amount charged is only
nominal and affordable. Without
any doubt, quality of service can be
improved provided these funds are
utilized properly without any leak.
Since, highly qualified hands are
working in these institutions,
people will be attracted, if the
quality is improved. Better
equipment in the qualified hand
is ten times better than those in the
ordinary man. Ifwe have produced
astonishing results and attracted
worldwide attention with the
present meagre income, without
doubt we can produce miracles in
this sector with better funds.
The protest against user fee is
not rational. It is simply to get
public support and to safeguard
vote banks. Instead of protesting
against the charge of user fees
people should cooperate with govt
considering the significance of
health. Our political leaders are
getting treatment in foreign
hospitals by paying huge sums and
often at the cost of the state. Since
health is the so precious, weshould
not oppose it for mere political
gains.
In addition to the user fees govt
may opt for instituting insurance
scheme for arising fund, as
introduced in many other
