High-quality knowledge infrastructure for drinking water in the Antilles<br />

On 15 November, a cooperative agreement was signed in <strong>Delft</strong> between the University of the Netherlands<br />

Antilles, the Caribbean <strong>Water</strong> Technology Research Institute, the Associati<strong>on</strong> of Dutch <strong>Water</strong> Companies, the<br />

Suriname <strong>Water</strong> Board and <strong>Delft</strong> University of Technology. The cooperative agreement promotes far-reaching<br />

cooperati<strong>on</strong> in higher educati<strong>on</strong> and research c<strong>on</strong>cerning the provisi<strong>on</strong> of drinking water supplies. The group’s<br />

comm<strong>on</strong> goal is to set up a high-quality knowledge infrastructure in water-system management for the Dutch<br />

Antilles, Aruba and Suriname.<br />

with the aid of windmills and solar cells, biofouling of reverse osmosis membranes, hardening drinking<br />

water using calcium carb<strong>on</strong>ate granules, decentralised microbiological disinfecti<strong>on</strong> in the distributi<strong>on</strong> net, and<br />

the effect of new political relati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> the policy aspects governing drinking water. There will also be a range<br />

of lectures and intensive workshops <strong>on</strong> water technology organised in 2008 in the Antilles.<br />

An initiative of the drinking water sector in the Netherlands, this agreement was drawn up by Alexander Vos<br />

de Wael, director of the Oasen drinking water company. and ben Statia, director of Aqualectra.<br />
