Highlights in <strong>2007</strong><br />
More than 400 people participated in the annual “Vakantiecursus” in the sec<strong>on</strong>d week of January. The theme of<br />
the “Vakantiecursus” was “Crossing borders” and several well known nati<strong>on</strong>al and internati<strong>on</strong>al water researchers<br />
gave presentati<strong>on</strong>s about water related topics <strong>on</strong> this day.<br />
Jan Vreeburg defended his PhD thesis “Discolourati<strong>on</strong> in drinking water systems: a particular approach” successfully<br />
in the spring of <strong>2007</strong>. Alex van der Helm defended his thesis “Integrated modeling of oz<strong>on</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> for<br />
optimizati<strong>on</strong> of drinking water treatment” at the end of <strong>2007</strong>.<br />
Several internati<strong>on</strong>al researchers visited our research group to work <strong>on</strong> collaborative research projects. Janis<br />
Rubulis (Est<strong>on</strong>ia), Bhekie Mamba (South Africa), Zhiping Li (China), Rusnandi Garsadi (Ind<strong>on</strong>esia) worked<br />
during some time together with some of our researchers. Luuk Rietveld visited the University of Johannesburg<br />
(South Africa) for 3 m<strong>on</strong>ths for a sabbatical.<br />
On June 21-22 the sec<strong>on</strong>d Internati<strong>on</strong>al C<strong>on</strong>ference High Quality <strong>Drinking</strong> <strong>Water</strong> was held at <strong>Delft</strong> University<br />
of Technology. The seminar was organized in collaborati<strong>on</strong> with UNESCO-IHE, <strong>Delft</strong> Cluster and Techneau.<br />
Around 60 researchers and engineers from the Netherlands and abroad participated. The presentati<strong>on</strong>s were<br />
given by PhD-students and professors from around the globe. All presentati<strong>on</strong>s were recorded and can be<br />
viewed <strong>on</strong>-line from our web site.<br />
In <strong>2007</strong> three new PhD projects were initiated. Our research group welcomed Doris van Halem, Karin Teunissen<br />
and Mirjam Blokker as new PhD-students (see also secti<strong>on</strong> “Individual Research Projects”).<br />

grant is aimed to stimulate knowledge exchange between universities and companies. In <strong>2007</strong> three Innowator<br />
����������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������<br />
with plate aerators and PhotoOx for advanced photocatalytic oxidati<strong>on</strong> for drinking water treatment.<br />
