Highlights in 2007
More than 400 people participated in the annual “Vakantiecursus” in the second week of January. The theme of
the “Vakantiecursus” was “Crossing borders” and several well known national and international water researchers
gave presentations about water related topics on this day.
Jan Vreeburg defended his PhD thesis “Discolouration in drinking water systems: a particular approach” successfully
in the spring of 2007. Alex van der Helm defended his thesis “Integrated modeling of ozonation for
optimization of drinking water treatment” at the end of 2007.
Several international researchers visited our research group to work on collaborative research projects. Janis
Rubulis (Estonia), Bhekie Mamba (South Africa), Zhiping Li (China), Rusnandi Garsadi (Indonesia) worked
during some time together with some of our researchers. Luuk Rietveld visited the University of Johannesburg
(South Africa) for 3 months for a sabbatical.
On June 21-22 the second International Conference High Quality Drinking Water was held at Delft University
of Technology. The seminar was organized in collaboration with UNESCO-IHE, Delft Cluster and Techneau.
Around 60 researchers and engineers from the Netherlands and abroad participated. The presentations were
given by PhD-students and professors from around the globe. All presentations were recorded and can be
viewed on-line from our web site.
In 2007 three new PhD projects were initiated. Our research group welcomed Doris van Halem, Karin Teunissen
and Mirjam Blokker as new PhD-students (see also section “Individual Research Projects”).
