Biography<br />
Charles Crowell came to the University of Notre Dame in 1974, and is currently in the<br />
Department of Psychology where he serves as director of the Cognitive Psychology <strong>Program</strong>.<br />
He also is director of the Computer Applications <strong>Program</strong>, a supplementary major in the<br />
College of Arts and Letters. Along with his empirical and theoretical work on basic mechanisms<br />
of learning and motivation, Crowell has been involved for more than 25 years in applications<br />
of psychology and technology to learning, productivity, and performance improvement in<br />
organizations. As part of this work, he has investigated how personal computer applications<br />
can be designed to augment human performance. He has published and lectured widely on<br />
topics including learning, motivation, performance technology, organizational effectiveness,<br />
and the use of computer technology to assist in organizational improvement. Crowell also has<br />
worked with national and international companies on issues related to employee effectiveness,<br />
applications of technology, and management development.<br />

Guided Self Development—A Mentoring Approach to Effective Management<br />
and Leadership<br />
In this lecture, Crowell describes his work in the development of a new paradigm of management and leadership based on<br />
mentoring employees. The “manager as director” is distinguished from the “manager as mentor”. The specific steps of the<br />
mentoring technique are described along with the long-term benefits of this approach.<br />
How Notre Dame Develops Leaders<br />
The fact that Notre Dame produces a large number of highly successful leaders is no accident. In this lecture, Crowell describes<br />
his background and association with Notre Dame. He identifies some key characteristics of effective leadership, and explores<br />
the various ways in which the Notre Dame educational experience instills those qualities in its students during their time at the<br />
University.<br />
