Biography<br />

Jim Frabutt, Ph.D., is a faculty member in the Mary Ann Remick Leadership <strong>Program</strong> in the<br />

Alliance for Catholic Education and Concurrent Associate Professor of Psychology at the<br />

University of Notre Dame. He is a Fellow in the Center for Social Concerns and within the<br />

Institute for Educational Initiatives. With colleagues in the Remick Leadership <strong>Program</strong>, he has<br />

co-authored three books: Research, Action, and Change: Leaders Reshaping Catholic Schools;<br />

Faith, Finance, and the Future: The Notre Dame Study of U.S. Pastors; and Action Research in<br />

Catholic Schools: A Step-by-Step Guide for Practitioners.<br />

His professional efforts have been centered on understanding and developing policies,<br />

practices, and systems that support children and families’ quality of life. He has employed<br />

action-oriented, community-based research approaches to areas such as delinquency<br />

prevention, school-based mental health, teacher/administrator inquiry, racial disparities in the juvenile justice system, and<br />

community violence reduction. He has made presentations at the National Outreach Scholarship Conference, the National Youth<br />

At-Risk Conference, the National Catholic Educational <strong>Association</strong>, and annual conferences of Project Safe Neighborhoods. He<br />

is a member of the Society for Research in Child Development, the American Psychological <strong>Association</strong>, the National Council on<br />

Family Relations, and the Mental Health-Education Integration Consortium. He has a bachelor’s degree in psychology (University<br />

of Notre Dame) and master’s and doctoral degrees in human development and families studies (University of North Carolina at<br />

Greensboro).<br />

The Corner of Notre Dame Avenue and Main Street: Community-Engaged Scholarship at<br />

Notre Dame<br />

There is great movement toward harnessing the potential of university scholarship for benefiting the common good. In fact,<br />

many universities prize such community-based efforts, embracing the moniker of “engaged institutions.” What does communityengaged<br />

scholarship look like at Notre Dame? This presentation highlights faculty and staff efforts to contribute to community<br />

change and student learning at the local, national, and international levels.<br />

Entrusted in Faith: Parents, Children, and Catholic Schools<br />

Throughout the history of Catholic education, the Catholic Church has emphasized and extolled the primacy of parents in the<br />

education of their children. The family is, as the Catholic tradition has named it, a house church. Because of this undeniable<br />

developmental influence, there is a great need for parents to be well-versed in Church teaching regarding their role in Catholic<br />

schools. Drawing on over 30 Church source documents, this presentation outlines six major themes that form the heart of the<br />

Church’s teaching regarding faith, parents, and Catholic schools.<br />
