Photo: Hahne 30 The Hanoverian 09|2012 If you drive south from Verden for about 700 kilometers you will arrive in Pfalzgrafenweiler that Erich Single calls home. The 56-year old businessman operates a successful Hanoverian breeding program on a beautifully situated10 hectare farm. If you look from the farm buildings over to the valley you will first see a dressage ring and then fields that are surrounded by woods. When Erich Single opens the gate of the open-stall where his mare herd lives, they gallop with their foals to these fields on paths that were designed for just that purpose. You quickly realize that Erich Single is a horseman once you strike up a conversation with him. The sparkle in his eyes and the excitement in his voice when he talks about his horses leave no room for doubt. He lives with and for his horses. “We had a small agricultural operation in earlier times,” the breeder starts telling, “that’s when the contact with horses began.” He has bred Württemberg horses since the beginning of the seventies. He successfully competed locally in jumper classes at the L- and M-level. Incited by friends the Swabian put out his feelers towards Hanover almost 20 years later. If you are from Northern Germany and you drive onto his farm today you would immediately notice the Gable of Lower Saxony on the wall opposite to the house. The then already retired State Stud employee Otto Panning offered advise to Erich Single when he started breeding Hanoverian horses. He drove to his former place of employment which was the breeding station Landesbrück with Erich Single. Since then Grande, World Cup and their descendants enjoy Erich Single’s respect as a breeder. “It was not easy to find a dressage filly for 10,000 Erich Single und Famms Enkelin: Gräfin v. Graf Top aus Shutterflys Vollschwester Shuttergirl. Photo: Hahne DM.” It had to be a dressage filly as his life-partner Silvia Schnittenhelm is an enthusiastic dressage rider. Among others she has successfully competed up to the S-level on the Hanoverian Walk-Over by Werther/Daimyo xx. Erich Single found what he was looking for at Family Kropp in Sittensen. He bought a mare by Grandferdinand/Waidmannsdank xx. He adds with a smile, “As a dressage mare.” “The next year Otto Panning said to me: This time get a dressage horse. You can use the other mare as a jumper, too. After all I knew that you preferred a jumper.” At first Grandy’s offspring carried the Württemberg brand. The H brand returned to the left hip of the descendants out of this dam line one generation later. Connection to the Olympic champion “Thoroughbred blood is important,” Erich Single says, “Even though I never use Throughbreds directly I pay attention to the fact that the stallions I use are Thoroughbred influenced. The Thoroughbred blood always came through in Grandy’s offspring. For instance in her most successful descendant Desperado S by Divino de L: he was successful with Michael Jung from the Bundeschampionate up to international CIC**-classes.” The connection between the breeder and the Olympic champion Michael Jung is very special. “His father rode my horses,” Erich Single says with pride. When people asked him who his rider was they often advised him to look for a real rider. Today nobody says that anymore. The connection to Michael Jung appropriately characterizes the way Erich Single operates. He is not interested in quick success. He relies on
continuity with horses as well as people. If he believes in a horse he will give it time. Patience is one of his assets. Erich Single values mutual and reliable partners and friends. Erich Single has sent his young horses to Eva Hauke in Gärtringen who starts them under saddle for more than 30 years. If the development of a horse takes an unexpected turn into an undesirable direction, Erich Single does not have to rely on horse dealers. “Word has got around that I will sell a decent horse occasionally for less money. If the riders are satisfied, they pass this information on. ”The Swabian always returns!” Ruxandra by Rubinstein/World Cup was the second mare to come to Pfalzgrafenweiler – it was the said dressage mare! She did not have much of a dressage career however. Instead she helped Michael Jung win the German Young Rider Championship title in eventing! In the early 1990s Ruxandra was the beginning of a relationship between Erich Single and the mare’s breeder Hans-Heinrich Müller, Stade. A relationship that still exists today according to Hans-Heinrich Müller’s wife Christine. Once Müller told him, “Many say they will return, only a few do. The Swabian however returns again and again.” Erich Single has driven the 700 kilometers to the Hanoverian breeding area many a time. Verden’s auction is a must; he visits the shows in Stade’s breeding area as often as he can. Erich Single bought his third Hanoverian broodmare Wahira by Wolkenstein II/ Bolero at Paul Nodop’s farm. Her performance test result is printed in messing and decorates a wall in Pfalzengrafenweiler. It reads almost all nines and tens! Most Hanoverians came to Pfalzgrafenweiler as foals or yearlings just like these three Hanoverian mares did. Part of Erich Single’s continuity is to stay at the same hotel when attending shows on the Dobrock, in Freiburg or Ihlenworth and Krautsand. By chance he met Uwe Dreesmann from Hesel at just this hotel. The dam of Shutterfly called Famm was then a young mare and became Hanoverian Mare of the Year later on. A deep friendship developed out of the two men meeting at the hotel and resulted in Graefin by Graf Top/Silvio who is Famm´s one and only granddaughter so far to live in Pfalzgrafenweiler. She is in foal to Perigueux. “Dam lines are important to me,” the successful breeder explains who sees his breeding program as specialized in dressage and jumping with an emphasis on the latter. He does not specifically try to breed an event horse in spite of his friendship to Michael Jung. “This seems too difficult,” Erich Single says. Nonetheless the halfbred racehorse mare Landana by Colon xx/Hohritt xx (breeder: Bernhard Revens, Le- xow) moved into the barn of Erich Single. Landana is a representative of the dam line of Andreas Dibowski’s Olympic horse Leonas Dancer and Butts Leon. This year Landana produced a foal by Grey Top, “I see this dam line as an interesting addition to my breeding program.” Up to now ten of Erich Singles mares represent the Hanoverian colors in Baden-Württemberg. Erich Single uses stallions of which most have proven their abilities in competition like Stolzenberg, Perigueux, Breitling W and Damsey. He focuses on sport horses for higher demands. Bundeschampionat successes and competition successes at the Slevel confirm the considerations of the breeder; they do not include only performance aspects though, “They have to look like horses and have a good disposition, too.” “I still have two goals,” Erich single says with sparkling eyes, “to have a licensed stallion in Verden and to breed a Hanoverian event horse for Michael Jung.” These goals are by no means far fetched. I would like to bring the Hanoverian Support Association FRH to Baden-Württemberg. I am not going to do anything crazy though. It has to be a good fit,” he adds with a smile.
