3.10 En Dashes<br />

An en dash is twice as long as a hyphen and received its name from being the width of a typewritten<br />

letter n. It is referred to in Russian as a “тире.” At the first stage, it is designated by two hyphens,<br />

i.e., --.<br />

3.10.1 Use an en dash without spaces to mean to or through with a span of numerals.<br />

3.10.2 Do not use an en dash when the words from or between are used. Also, do not use an en dash<br />

to indicate a range of numbers expressed as words.<br />

between 7 and 10 days four to seven days (instead of four–seven days)<br />

3.10.3 Do not use an en dash between two or more unit modifiers having the same base and a<br />

hyphen after each element; use to or another linking word or symbol.<br />

0.5- to 10-cm tube (not 0.5–10-cm tube)<br />

high-, medium-, and low-frequency measurements<br />

Note: The following is acceptable with abbreviated units of measure.<br />

3.10.4 Do not use an en dash between two negative quantities or between a negative and positive<br />

quantity; use to, or from and to, instead. Do not use an ellipsis.<br />
