Fermentation Technology RAMOS ® Bioprocess Optimisation in Shaking Flasks RAMOS (Respiration Activity MOnitoring System) is the standard measurement system online determination of respiration activities of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cultures in shaking flasks. The respiration rate is usually directly proportional to the number of cells and therefore enables continuous monitoring of the growth progression. RAMOS pays off within short time due to the reduction of laboratory hours and development periods. In addition, production costs can be consistently and significantly reduced due to more efficient strains and culture procedures which can be discovered with the help of RAMOS. Up To now the development of suitable media has always been neglected due to the large connected expenditures. Exemplary for this fact is that LBmedia were used for decades as standard media for Escherichia coli bacteria. Already the initial investigation with RAMOS led to the insight that this medium does not allow an optimum growth due to its insufficient buffer effect. One can securely analyse the behaviour of microbial cultures with the help of measuring curves delivered by RAMOS, e.g.: � substrate limitation � oxygen limitation � product inhibition � diauxic growth the decisive impulses for research that has been worked on for years.
