Rincón de la Victoria
extends its promenade
Residents’ choice
in seafront design
promises to blend
into the natural
surroundings
EVA GUZMÁN RINCÓN DE LA VICTORIA
Last week the town council of
Rincón de la Victoria announced
that the Coasts Department has
begun taking steps towards the
construction of a new promenade
along the 3.5 kilometres of seafront
in Torre de Benagalbón.
The announcement was well received
by residents of the area
who believe developing the seafront
stretch will be very beneficial.
Pepa Rodríguez commented,
“On the one hand we’re sorry it
will no longer be an untouched
area of land because it will lose a
bit of its charm but on the other
hand the zone will be revitalized.”
The main problem with the area
at the moment is that vehicles
driving on the track next to the
sand kick up a lot of dust. Excess
dust makes it difficult for residents
wanting to practice sport along
DISSATISFIED. RESIDENTS LOOK FORWARD TO THEIR NEW PROM. E. G.
the coast. “It would be much better
if they opened cafés and shops
because at the moment you can’t
even go for a walk comfortably.”
The two residents associations
of Torre de Benagalbón are in
agreement that the space created
should be a natural one which
blends into the environment. Juan
Márquez, president of the Los Rubios
residents association, explained:
“Years ago we got together
with the Government’s
Coasts Department and emphasised
that we don’t want a con-
crete sea front like in Rincón.” Instead
they have opted for a design
similar to that in Peñón del Cuervo
which will incorporate winding
pathways and gardens and
will be between six and nine metres
in width.
While the president of the residents
association Torresol, Eduardo
Ballesteros, is in favour of a
new promenade, he considers
there to be more pressing issues
like the construction of a new
health centre or “road resurfacing
to improve quality of life”.
Marbella views fifty
years of Kovatchev’s art
CHADD RITENBAUGH
A retrospective exhibition of the
works of Valentín Kovatchev is on
display at the Museo Cortijo Miraflores
in central Marbella until
October 12th.
The exhibition examines the
full visual and conceptual range
of the artist from 1959-2009. The
exhibition also explores the variety
of modes that Kovatchev
employs in his works, from pencil
and charcoal drawings, oil on
canvas, watercolor, giclée and
engravings.
The Bulgaria-born artist
trained at an arts academy in Sophia
and later studied languages
in Prague. Kovatchev became interested
in the engraving tech-
KOVATCHEV. ‘FABULOSO BRUSSELS’, 1992.
niques first developed by Spanish
masters like Goya and Durero,
and in 1990 he temporarily abandoned
painting altogether in order
to concentrate on his own
technique. He shares a deep fascination
with Spanish culture and
his subjects often include figures
from Spanish history, art and literature
portrayed in a surrealist
style.
Kovatchev has won multiple
awards for his work and has exhibited
throughout Europe and
Asia. He obtained Spanish citizenship
in 1999 and currently resides
in Benalmádena. The exhibition
is open Monday to Friday
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
to 9 p.m. For more information
