The SCROLL of <strong>Phi</strong> <strong>Delta</strong> <strong>Theta</strong> for December, 1937<br />

this fall. Through the efforts of Brother Stevenson,<br />

newly appointed assistant secretary of the national<br />

committee on Exchange Scholarships, the chapter is<br />

enjoying the benefits of one of the * A 9 foreign<br />

student exchanges. Ernst Rdhr of Germany is living<br />

at the fraternity house, exchanging with Al Behrens,<br />

who is now in Germany. The chapter likes Ernst for<br />

his fine qualities and the maimer in which he has so<br />

quickly adjusted himself to American life.—RICHARD<br />

ILLINOIS DELTA-ZETA—Illinois Ddta-Zeta<br />

opened its sixty-seventh year with the pledging of<br />

twenty men. On the varsity football team this year<br />

are Matkovdk, co-captain and tackle; Trevor, tackle;<br />

Lackman, center; <strong>Phi</strong>keia McGrew, halfback; Velde,<br />

reserve tackle; and Hinchliff, manager. <strong>Phi</strong>keias Fender<br />

and Gridley are on the freshman squad, of which<br />

<strong>Phi</strong>keias Rheinfrank and Colwell are managers. Chapter<br />

leaders in various fields of campus activity are:<br />

Trevor, editor of the Knox Student; Johnson, business<br />

manager of the Knox Theater; Sperry, president of<br />

B .B B; Rosenbaum, dramatics; Seltzer, publications;<br />

and Claus, student coundl. Other actives and pledges<br />

have proved themsdves interested in campus activities<br />

as many are now working as apprentices in that<br />

organization or activity which holds the greatest appeal<br />

for them. During the summer the chapter house<br />

was repainted on the outside and redecorated in part<br />

on the inside under the direction of Jim Trevor,<br />

house manager, and Richard R. Larson, chapter adviser.—CHARLES<br />

ILLINOIS ETA.—Illinois Eta opened the school<br />

year with a very successful rush week, and seventeen<br />

excellent fellows were pledged. A vigorous effort is<br />

being made to retain the intramural trophy which<br />

was won last year. The softball team is undefeated.<br />

The track team won its fourth successive meet. Keller<br />

was high-point man, with firsts in the high jump<br />

and pole vault; he also ran on the winning relay<br />

team. Other point winners were Conrad, Carson,<br />

Shuber, Snorf, and Fultz. We are well represented in<br />

vanity football by captain Spurgeon, Castello, Wardley,<br />

Porter, Thistlewood, Conrad, Tuck, and Erie. Bob<br />

Cutter is on the swimming and water polo squad, and<br />

Schaeffer plays with the polo team. John Muhson is<br />

on the editorial staff of the Illio, while Woodward<br />

works on the business staff on the same publication.<br />

In athletic managerships we have Dunn, baseball;<br />

Slater, football; McKelvey, track; and Sethness, jimior<br />

basketball. Pitzer is a junior IlUo editor. Spurgeon<br />

and Layman were dected to Ma-wan-da, Senior honorary<br />

society. Sethness, Pitzer, Castello, and Wardley<br />

were made members of Sachem, Junior Honorary.<br />

Kirby and Woodward were chosen to represent the<br />

chapter in Skull and Crescent, Sophomore fraternity<br />

honorary. Kirby is active in debate and dramatics.<br />

Strauch recently won the $400 Allerton Travelling<br />

Felowship. The winner was determined by a competitive<br />

examination in architectural history.—EM-<br />

INDIANA ALPHA Indiana Alpha is still continuing<br />

to make itself a vital part of the Indiana<br />

University college life. Nineteen <strong>Phi</strong>keias, many of<br />

whom already show themselves to be real <strong>Phi</strong> material,<br />

constitute this year's pledge dass. The annual<br />

pledge dance has been held, and was attended with<br />

unusual success. October 16 was Homecoming and<br />

many young and old alumni were back at Indiana<br />

Alpha. Fall initiation ceremonies were held for seven<br />

men, as follows: J. D. Sharp. Charles Thorns, Dick<br />

'37<br />

Trester, Dick Herd, Ben Barr, Tom Cosgrove, and<br />

Louis Pletcher, Many <strong>Phi</strong>s are carving names for<br />

themselves on Indiana athletic teams. Captain<br />

Kenderdine is the stdlar end on the Crimson eleven.<br />

On the freshman football team are <strong>Phi</strong>keias Brooks,<br />

Sede, Golay, and Eikenberry. Thus it appears that<br />

time to come. Weir is aspiring for a position on the<br />

vareity basketball team. Kingdon and Thoms represent<br />

Velkoff is trying out daily for the swimming team.<br />

Hoover is given an excellent chance of earning a<br />

position on the wrestling team. Hawkins is a member<br />

of the rifle team. However, athletics do not reign<br />

supreme. Kenderdine is a member of the Dragon's<br />

Head, Union Board, and the Sphinx Club; Hawkins<br />

is cadet lieutenant-colonel of the R.O.T.C and president<br />

of Scabbard and Blade; Kaufmann, King, and<br />

Inthout are junior officers; in ^ H £. we have<br />

Spraul and Weir; Southworth, Barnhill. and Pletdier<br />

INDIANA BETA—Indiana Beta of * A 9 has<br />

high hopes of enjoying a most successful year with<br />

the help of our new pledges. We would like to take<br />

this opportunity to thank the many alumni who hdped<br />

in obtaining this freshman dass. The chapter has received<br />

one new brother: Earl L. Johnson, Jr., Crawfordsville,<br />

was initiated on September 24. In fall<br />

sports Indiana Beta is well represented, with Wahl<br />

bolstering the line at center for the varsity, and<br />

<strong>Phi</strong>keias McConnel, Beaning, Lookabill, and Armstrong<br />

active on the freshman squad. On the crosscountry<br />

team Baron and Mefford are serving as cocaptains;<br />

<strong>Phi</strong>keia Cress is also active in this fidd.<br />

Wahl was pledged to Sphinx Club. <strong>Phi</strong>keia Generis<br />

is the business manager of the Caveman, the college<br />

weekly publication. Post is assistant editor of the<br />

yearbook; <strong>Phi</strong>keias McConndl, Thomas, and Wheeler<br />

are reporters. We are represented on the college<br />

newspaper, the Bachelor, by <strong>Phi</strong>keias Wheeler, Wirt,<br />

Lookabill, and Brother Burk. Hester was awarded<br />

membership in A H, the honorary sdence fraternity.<br />

<strong>Phi</strong>keia Williams is serving as cheer leader, and was<br />

dected vice-president of the freshman dass. Keck was<br />

dected president of the junior dass. Our house has<br />

been rejuvenated over the summer by the repapering<br />

of the rooms, and addition of new furniture and<br />

desks. <strong>No</strong> small part of this improvement is due to<br />

the work of William Guthrie, our chapter adviser.<br />

The Mothers' Club also hdped in brightening up the<br />

house. Alumni contacts have been renewed through<br />

the publication of the Indiana Beta News Sheet<br />

largdy by the efforts of Steeg. A charity bridge party<br />

was given under the capable chairmanship of Baron;
