The SCROLL of <strong>Phi</strong> <strong>Delta</strong> <strong>Theta</strong> for June, 1938 361<br />

engaged in life insurance activities, to study for<br />

examinations offered by the College leading to<br />

the C.L.U. degree, meaning Chartered Life Underwriter.<br />

Almost from the inception of the C.L.U.<br />

program, about ten years ago. Dr. Williams has<br />

been deeply interested in the work of the American<br />

College of Life Underwriters. He is a<br />

holder of the C.L.U. degree. For the past seven<br />

years he has conducted C.L.U. study groups<br />

at various <strong>No</strong>rth Carolina Centers in preparation<br />

for CX.U. examinations with extraordinary<br />

success.<br />

Dr. Williams will take up the duties of the<br />

new department at the close of the present college<br />

year -at Davidson. His headquarters office<br />

will then be in <strong>Phi</strong>ladelphia with the American<br />

College of Life Underwriters at the University<br />

of Pennsylvania. Dr. Solomon S. Huebner, one<br />

of the founders of the College, is its President.<br />

He is a Professor of Insurance in the Wharton<br />

School of Economics and Business Science.—<br />

Pennsylvania '90, if the faculty's ideas failed to<br />

click with his? And could he help it if they put<br />

"ex-" in front of his numerals after one brief<br />

but highly agreeable year?<br />

After they cast a jaundiced eye on his efforts<br />

with utter lack of appreciation, no wonder he<br />

withdrew from college in wounded dignity.<br />

Though he had been the fifth member of the<br />

first chapter at Pennsylvania, the link with his<br />

Fraternity was severed. <strong>No</strong>t until Dean Hoffman's<br />

letter of invitation reached him, asking<br />

him to attend the Founders Day Banquet of<br />

the <strong>Phi</strong>ladelphia Alumni Club, to receive the<br />

Golden Legion certificate, did he break his retirement<br />

or attend any
