and McDougall had r61es in the spring play,<br />

while Bob King gave untiring services to the<br />

musical society. Smith was elected treasurer of<br />

the Student Council for 1937-38, The chapter<br />

was awarded the Harris Cup given to the fraternity<br />

having the highest scholastic standing in<br />

the university.<br />

California Alpha—^University of California<br />

THE chapter opened its house after a summer of<br />

remodeling, repairing, and refurbishing accomplished<br />

through the good efforts of the alumni.<br />

An intensive rush of freshmen netted fourteen<br />

<strong>Phi</strong>keias with six more taking the button at the<br />

beginning of the spring term. Football season<br />

found K. Cotton, Thomas, and Dolman on the<br />

varsity team. Barker, Fishbum, <strong>Phi</strong>l Markwart,<br />

and Captain Dolman, were members of the<br />

rugby squad. Dick David won his "C" in basketball<br />

and baseball. He was joined in baseball by<br />

Carl Fox. Bill Beal rowed in the first varsity boat.<br />

Ned Thomas was a strong contender on the<br />

varsity track team. Managerial positions were<br />

held by Middleton, sophomore football; Bob<br />

Thomas, junior basketball; Deubner, junior intramural;<br />

and Crist, senior rugby. The <strong>Phi</strong>keias<br />

were thoroughly active in their class sports.<br />

Modisette was elected captain of the freshman<br />

track team. He broke the California half-mile<br />

record. Bob Harmon, <strong>No</strong>rthern California champion<br />

and recent national junior tennis champion,<br />

was elected co-captain of the freshman tennis<br />

team. Dion O'Sullivan won his numerals for work<br />

on the freshman crew. Dick Sheffield was on the<br />

frosh basketball squad. Don Nelson was a member<br />

of the varsity net and golf teams. Honor society<br />

elections named Barker to B B, senior men's<br />

honorary; Thomas, K. Cotton, Sexson, and<br />

Barker to Skull and Keys, interfratemity honorary<br />

society; Deubner and Dolman to 4» 4>;<br />

Dolman to B B and Golden Bear; Modisette and<br />

Harman to Vigilantes; Modisette to Triune,<br />

sophomore men's honorary; and Nelson to 6 T<br />

of which Chubb is president. Bob Peterson was<br />

secretary of the freshman class. Applegate and<br />

Stutt were successful in getting their senior and<br />

junior appointments to the Wheel and Torch<br />

society. Jackson Faustman received the McDonald<br />

Scholarship in engineering. O'Sullivan received a<br />

Pershing medal for excellence in rifiery. The<br />

chapter joined California Beta in a picnic at the<br />

Rolph ranch and in celebrating Founders' Day<br />

in San Francisco. A father and son banquet was<br />

one of the interesting events on the social calendar.<br />

California Beta—Stanford University<br />

CALIFORNIA BETA opened the year by establishing<br />

one of the first <strong>Phi</strong> <strong>Delta</strong> <strong>Theta</strong> Scholarships.<br />

The presence of Hans Eric Schurer of Germany<br />

in the chapter house gave the members novel<br />

educational opportunity. The opening of the<br />

football season gave many chapter members<br />

nightly workouts. Stone and Mangan earned<br />

letters while Schott, Collins, Olcott, Madlem,<br />

Kirsch, DeWitt, Camahan, and Heggie saw action.<br />

Water-polo letters were won by Hoover, Vibert,<br />

and Burns, with Shallenberger and Prince active<br />

contenders for positions. Quade, a member of last<br />

year's championship basketball team, retained<br />

his position. In the same sport, freshman numerals<br />

were earned by Anderson and Oakford. Dillon,<br />

O'Neal, and Manning all shooting in the<br />

lower 70's were members of the golf team. Seward,<br />

captain of the tennis team, and Dey, who<br />

in 1936 won the National Intercollegiate doubles<br />

championship, were again topnotch net men<br />

working hard to defend their title. The cinder<br />

path featured Kneubuhl, letterman in the<br />

sprints; Oberg and Hewitt over the hurdles;<br />

Madlem, broad jump kicker; and Stone hurler<br />

of the javelin. Letters in boxing were punched<br />

out by Gunn and Mangan. Top sprint man of<br />

the swimming team was Vibert. Paine, DeWitt,<br />

and Heggie were on the varsity baseball squad.<br />

In an effort to repeat the previous year's intramural<br />

championship the chapter's teams were<br />

far ahead with an undefeated football team, a<br />

handball team reaching the finals, a golf team<br />

in the semi-finals, and a track championship bolstered<br />

by Oberg. Honorary societies enrolled Dey<br />

and Quade as members of the men's council, Burris<br />

graduate member of the executive committee.<br />

Hoover president of the interfratemity board,<br />

Blackburn and Olcott as members of 4» *, and<br />

Fitch a member of Scalpers.<br />
