The Sino-German Master Programme in
Marine Sciences was jointly developed by
the universities and research institutions in
Bremen and Kiel and by the Ocean University
of China (OUC) in Qingdao; it was
launched in the winter term 2006/07. This
international programme offers graduate students
admitted at one of the three
universities, a two-term programme in certain
disciplines of marine sciences at the partner
university abroad. Successful participation
in this English language study programme
will be certified by the host
university. Afterwards the students complete
their studies at their home university, where
they also submit their thesis. Master students
will be awarded a Master of Science Double
Degree in marine sciences from the Chinese
The Sino-German Master Programme
comprises the following marine-related disciplines
at the three participating universities.
Chinese master students can choose from
five different subjects in Germany: Marine
Biology, Aquatic Tropical Ecology, Marine
Geosciences or Environmental Physics at the
University of Bremen and Biological Oceanography
at the University of Kiel. At the
OUC, two main subjects are currently offered
to graduate students admitted at one
of the German universities: Marine Biology
as well as Physical & Environmental
Oceanography. Until 2009 the German Federal
Ministry of Education and Research
(BMBF) and the Chinese Ministry of Education
(MoE) provide annual grants for 20
students from the German universities and
20 students from OUC. In September 2006,
the first four German students enrolled at
OUC. 20 Chinese students have been studying
marine sciences at the two German
universities.
As an accompanying measure, annually
organised summer schools are conducted in
China or Germany. The primary objective
is to bring together Chinese and German M.
Sc. and Ph.D. candidates within short-term
training courses and to promote contacts
among the marine scientists and students as
well as to enable the initiation of new research
projects that are of mutual interest.
This year’s summer school on “Processes in
Coastal Zones,”which will be held in
Germany, has been scheduled for July.
