Research Directions:<br />
The Breast RIG’s research aims are to advance imaging-based<br />
approaches for breast cancer diagnosis, leading to earlier detec-<br />
tion, reduction <strong>of</strong> disease recurrence, and improved survival. Our<br />
major research areas include:<br />
n MRI and spectroscopy to assess breast tumor response to<br />
neoadjuvant chemotherapy. UCSF is the lead institution for<br />
the national ACRIN 6657/I-SPY breast cancer clinical trial<br />
testing MRI and molecular biomarkers for the prediction <strong>of</strong><br />
treatment response and survival for women receiving neo-<br />
adjuvant chemotherapy for locally advanced breast cancer<br />
n Computer-aided tools for real-time measurement <strong>of</strong> MRI biomarkers<br />
for breast cancer<br />
n MRI <strong>of</strong> ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) for staging and assessing<br />
response to hormonal treatment<br />
n Quantitative mammographic breast density measurement for<br />
breast cancer risk assessment<br />
n MRI-directed tissue biopsy for radiologic-pathologic correlation<br />
