El carnaval es marco de la entrega del
Premio de Literatura y basta ver la lista
de ganadores anteriores para descubrir
el fondo e importancia de los actos:
José Emilio Pacheco (1999), Juan Villoro
(2001), José Agustín (2005), Jorge Volpi
(2009), y en ediciones anteriores, Octavio
Paz, José Gorostiza y Jaime Torres
Bodet fueron galardonados.
Dentro del mismo marco se premian
las artes visuales y se celebra la Velada
de las Artes, donde exponentes de
nivel internacional preparan programas
pensados para el carnaval. Por ejemplo,
en este año el director Nicholas Palmer
dirigió a la Orquesta Sinfónica Sinaloa de

las Artes y al pianista Rich Ridenour en
un repertorio en honor a John Williams,
creador de las bandas sonoras de películas
como la Guerra de las Galaxias.
Hay un elemento básico responsable
de hacer contacto con el orgullo de
los pobladores: la elección de la reina,
ya que las candidatas provienen de las
escuelas, oficinas y en general de la ciudadanía.
En torno a ellas, una corte completa
trabaja por meses sin saber quién
será la triunfadora, y sin importar confecciona
el atavío que portará la gran noche.
Sodelva García ha pertenecido a esta
corte desde hace más de 30 años y su
cinta métrica ha abrazado a las mujeres
más hermosas en la historia del carnaval
en Mazatlán pues ella ha sido la encargada
de vestir no sólo a la reina sino a la
Reina de los Juegos Florales, a La Reina
infantil; a toda la “monarquía” mazatleca.
Entre “quebraditas”, el “pisto” interminable,
sonrisas, coqueteos, baile, gritos,
globos y luces se encuentran las comparsas,
que son el alma del desfile. Aunque
el carnaval de Mazatlán dura sólo seis
días, éstos son intensos, y todos saben
que lo que sucede en el carnaval no es
culpa de nadie. Así que no hay que esperar
a Navidad para comenzar de nuevo
pues en Sinaloa es posible hacerlo con
un rostro alegre, una chela en la mano y
música para no parar de bailar.

IN MAZATLÁN
In Mazatlán, many believe that
time is measured by the number
of carnivals experienced. If
that’s true, then it should also
be measured in yards of fabric,
pounds of pyrotechnics, gallons
of beer, number of participants
and millions and millions of
pesos spent.
Mazatlán locals look forward
to carnival all year round—
even national and international
celebrities make appearances
for the occasion—sitting on pins
and needles until the day the
festivities begin, when the whole
town comes together for a hip
shaking, foot tapping explosion
of sound and color.
During the course of six
days, the streets of the city
are closed to traffic, creating a
mile and a half-long pedestrian
circuit filled with lights,
big screens and loudspeakers.
Claussen and Olas Altas
are transformed from mere
streets into massive, outdoor
dancefloors, the sounds of the
carnival reverberating off of
them and into the northern areas
of the country and beyond.
The whole city comes together
in a happy, elated congeniality
that is second to none.
The event will run from
February 7 to 12, and will begin
with the traditional Quema del
Mal Humor—the burning of
bad mood—a party in which an
oversized paper doll is burned
at the beach as a symbol of the
destruction of bad luck and evil.
Judging by the smiles plastered
on everyone’s faces, it just may
work. Afterwards, incredible
floats drift down the streets,
illustrating local lore and
legends and creating mythical
and fantastical images.
The main carnival events
are the many crownings;
among them Queen of the Floral
Games, the Carnival Queen and
the Young Queen. Although the
Mazatlán carnival is less than a
week long, those days are jampacked—and
locals know not
to wait until New Years to make
their resolutions, because at the
carnival, anything can happen
and anyone can be reborn.
